MADISON, Wis. -- After a tough battle Friday evening, the Wisconsin volleyball team lost its first match of the season to end its season-opening win streak.  The Badgers lost in five sets to Ohio State 25-15, 16-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-11 in both teams Big Ten Conference opener.

Senior Allison Wack led both teams with 20 kills, tying her career-high set back last year against Duke. The senior ended the night with two service aces, to tie for match high honors, and two blocks. Freshman Elise Walch ended the night close behind with 16 kills. Four other Badgers finished with at least six kills in the match.

The Badgers (11-1 overall, 0-1 Big Ten) came out on top with 64 kills compared to the Buckeyes 58, but had trouble with consistency as they hit at .195 while Ohio State (13-1, 1-0) ended at .268. The Buckeyes also won the match with their blocking, taking a 14-9 advantage in stuffs.

Senior Katie Dull led Ohio State with 19 kills. The senior also added 14 digs and three blocks to her stat line. Anna Szerszen was close behind with 12 kills.

Senior Janelle Gabrielsen put up 47 assists for the Badgers and added 17 digs. The junior also led the team with five blocks.

Wisconsin edged Ohio State 65-64 in digs behind a match-high 20 saves from Kim Kuzma. Kuzma has recorded double-digits digs in her last 16 matches dating back to last season.

The Badgers won the serving contest, tallying six aces while only getting aced three times. In addition to Wack, Julie Mikaelsen added two aces.

After falling in the first set 25-15, the Badgers battled back in front of partisan crowd of 4,049 for a 25-16 win in the second set. Wisconsin went on a 9-2 run with a well-balanced attack as six different Badgers contributed to their 15 total kills.

Both teams stayed consistent in the third set, until Ohio State found a 5-1 run. The Badgers answered back later in the set with a 5-2 run to tie the score at 20. The score continued to stay tight until  Szerszen ended the match with a big kill for the 25-23 win.

The fourth set started strong for the Badgers as they controlled the game early on. The Buckeyes snuck back in, going on a 7-0 run to tie the score at 20. Wisconsin was able to finish things off with a kill from Gabrielsen for a 25-23 win to force the match to a fifth set for the first time all season.

Ohio State got off to an early 5-3 lead over the Badgers in the fifth set but Wisconsin answered back with a kill from Walch and two straight service aces from Wack. The Buckeyes then called their first timeout of the set and successfully iced the senior.

Szerszen made some big plays for the Buckeyes, putting down four big kills to tie the set at nine. Walch quieted the Ohio State bench down with a huge kill. Despite some impressive digs from Kuzma, OSU finished off the set on a 5-1 run with Dull tallying the match winner.

Wisconsin continues its homestand on Sunday, taking on the reigning NCAA champion Penn State at 1 p.m. in the UW Field House.
