MADISON, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin men's rowing team is pleased to announce that former Badger and two-time Olympic medalist Beau Hoopman will return to the UW rowing program as a volunteer coach.
Hoopman graduated from Madison in 2003 as a captain of the men's rowing team. A two-time Olympian, Hoopman was part of the men's eight boat that won the gold medal and set a world record in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, while also winning the bronze medal in the men's eight at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. In March of 2010, Hoopman was inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame in Connecticut.
Hoopman has participated on the U.S. national team for nine years. From 2001-02, Hoopman rowed on the under-23 team and from 2003-09 he was a member of the senior team. Hoopman earned several wins on the national stage, which include winning gold medals in the four and eight at the 2007 USRowing National Championships and a gold medal in the eight at the 2009 USRowing National Championships. Hoopman also participated in several international events including the 2009 World Rowing Championships in which he finished ninth in the eight, and the 2009 Rowing World Cup in Lucerne where he finished seventh in the eight.
"We are very pleased to have Beau join our staff," said Chris Clark, UW's head men's rowing coach. "While Beau has been a volunteer coach in the past, it was always in conjunction with his national team duties. As Beau is now retired form elite competition, he is able to contribute every day. It goes without saying that having a home grown Olympic champion around for the current guys is a huge plus for us."
