Final Stats

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women’s tennis team was kept off the scoreboard by a red-hot No. 11 Northwestern squad, falling 7-0, in Evanston Sunday afternoon. Despite the improved recent play of the Badgers (3-13, 1-4 B1G), the streaking Wildcats (10-7, 4-1 B1G) proved too much to handle, as UW became the second-straight Big Ten team to be swept by NU.

The Badgers were in a hole from the outset, as Northwestern claimed both the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches to open the day’s action. Belinda Niu and Kate Turvy blew by Katie Hoch and Anastasia Tripolskaya in the No. 2 match, 8-2, and No. 9 Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 defeat of Hannah Berner and Lauren Chypyha at No. 1.

With the point no longer in question, the No. 3 doubles match was halted with Voronica Corning and Alicia Barnett ahead of Lauren Burich and Pernilla Wohlstrom, 7-3.

Wisconsin’s deficit became 2-0 after it was forced to forfeit the No. 6 singles match. Hamilton bested Hoch at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1, to stretch NU’s lead to 3-0.

Burich, playing No. 4 singles for the match, fell to Mushrefova, 6-0, 6-3, allowing the Wildcats to clinch the match with a 4-0 lead.

At No. 3, Tripolskaya watched her five-match singles winning streak come to an end at the hands of Barnett, 6-3, 6-2. The match was Tripolskaya’s first at No. 3, as the Moscow native’s five-match winning-streak saw her move up from No. 5 to No. 3 in Wisconsin’s singles lineup.

Berner came up just short of scoring a nice upset for the Badgers at No. 1, as she fell to No. 96 Corning in a super-tiebreak, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9).

Chypyha’s 6-4, 6-3 loss to Niu at No. 2 wrapped up the day, with Wisconsin dropping its seventh-straight road match.

Wisconsin looks to bounce back from a pair of road losses when it returns home for two home matches this week. The Badgers square off against Ohio State at 2 p.m. on Friday before battling Penn State at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
