MADISON, Wis. -- After earning comeback wins in two of their three victories, the Wisconsin women’s soccer team has earned the reputation of being a resilient bunch.
The same couldn’t be said for the Badgers Friday night as UW dropped a 4-3 decision to the Vanderbilt Commodores at the McClimon Complex.

After going unbeaten during their four-game road trip, the Badgers fell just short in a back and forth battle with Vanderbilt, recording their first loss of the 2013 season.
”We had some great opportunities, in fact I think we could’ve put them away and gotten the win early in the second half,” UW head coach Paula Wilkins said. “We talked about maturing as a group and being able to do that better.
“In all, this was a great learning experience for a team that will be better because of this.”
Kinley McNicoll recorded three points on the evening, tallying a goal and an assist, while Rose Lavelle earned a pair of assists in the loss.
After entering the half knotted at 2-2, Marisa Kresge helped the Badgers regain the lead just five minutes into the second half. Rose Lavelle attempted a shot from 18 yards out and Kresge played the rebound, netting her first goal of the season.
Vanderbilt’s Simone Charley tallied the equalizer in the 64th minute off of a throw in from Andie Lakin, tying the game once again at 3-3. Following the score, Genevieve Richard exited the match with an unknown injury, replaced by freshman Meghan Ledin.
Two minutes later, during the 66th minute, the Commodores capitalized on the switch in net as Cheyna Williams beat the keeper far post to net the game winner for Vanderbilt.
“It’s disappointing to score three goals because at that point you expect to win the game,” Wilkins added.
McKenna Meuer tallied her first goal of the season just before the 15-minute mark. Meuer knocked down a kick to the back post, converting on a corner kick from Rose Lavelle that was played into the box by McNicoll.
The Commodores answered right back at the 20-minute mark with a goal by Cheyna Williams off of a throw in by Jamie Kator to give Vanderbilt the lead at 2-1.
Wisconsin outshot the Commodores 28-10, attempting 15 alone in the second half.
The Badgers return to the road on Wed., Sept. 9, to battle Loyola-Chicago. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
