Princeton, New Jersey – The Wisconsin men’s rowing program traveled to Princeton, New Jersey for their second race of fall season, The Princeton Chase.
The men raced in four events, including the varsity heavyweight eight, varsity heavyweight four, varsity lightweight four and the freshman heavyweight eight. The varsity eight got things rolling.
The B boat took eleventh place in the varsity eight, with a final time of 13:27.07. The A finished at 13:32.48, the C at 14:01.82 and the D at 14:17.08.
Head coach Chris Clark was pleased with how the B boat finished, “ In the eights, the A was very quick to the first mark and then got hit by headwind. That and some bad steering knocked them way back to 14th. The B started as the 60th entry, and really it was not an advantage to be that far back at all. Not only was there boat wakes, but also the wind during the race actually came up. It was an extremely impressive performance to get 11th after starting 60th. If you look at the results, you’ll see nobody that started that far back was anywhere near the top, so that was great for them.”
The varsity heavyweight four raced next and the C boat took fifth place in 14:52.51. After them, in 15th place, was the B boat at 15:13.71. The Wisconsin D boat finished 16th with a 15:14.09. Next was the Wisconsin A with a time of 15:27.52 and finally the E boat at 15:35.35, taking 26th place.
Clark also had great thoughts about the C four, “We had some good results, some mixed bag, a little misadventure. I think our best finish was fifth in the heavyweight fours in the C boat, which is great. Both the B and the A had course problems and the A came to a complete stop and got in a wreck. Who knows how many minutes it cost them. I think they were fifth or so to the first mark and then they finished in 23rd. That didn’t come together so well for them. They had some speed, but that happens sometimes in racing.”
The freshman heavyweight eight walked away with a sixth-place finish. They came in around 45 seconds behind the first place finisher, Harvard.
Clark added to his reflection of today’s events, “ The freshmen were sixth, which was good. They’ve rowed a couple of times in the lineup to try to throw it together for this. That’s sort of the nature of the way these fall races go. It’s not like you spend a lot of time preparing in a particular lineup, so we were pleased with that.”
The lightweight four was the last event of the day for Wisconsin. They came in sixth place, out of 34 entries, with a time of 15:33.59.
“The lightweight four was sixth, which was good because it was just a throw together boat just for this regatta,” remarked Clark. “I think they rowed the lineup maybe once or maybe not at all. They got sixth out of 52 fours and most programs had A and B fours so that was a real good performance for them.”
Clark added, “All in all its not an easy turn around after HOCR to zip right back out east and the guys did admirably well, and there’s a lot of moving here, moving there, running all over the place. Most of these east coast crews don’t fly anywhere the entire year and we’ve done that now twice in eight days’ time. Again, the guys were good sports about it, and you’ve got to go where the racing is and I’m happy we were here. It’s great to test yourself against these crews that you’re going to be racing later in the year. Now it’s back to rowing for the rest of fall.”
