MADISON, Wis. -- A field-goal drought that covered the final 6 minutes and 42 seconds proved to be the undoing of the No. 14 Wisconsin men’s basketball team in a 59-58 loss to No. 24 Ohio State on Saturday at the Kohl Center.
That dry spell from the floor, combined with a 4-for-10 showing at the free throw line over the final six minutes, allowed the Buckeyes (17-5, 4-5 Big Ten) to escape with the win in a physical, back-and-forth affair.
The setback came despite the best efforts of freshman Nigel Hayes, who boosted the Badgers by scoring 13 of his game-high 17 points in the second half. The Ohio native went 6-for-7 from the floor against the Buckeyes and also pulled down five rebounds.
Senior Ben Brust was another bright spot for Wisconsin, scoring 13 points to go along with seven rebounds in 39 minutes of action.
A 16-6 run that Hayes sparked with back-to-back baskets around the 15:30 mark of the second half helped turn a three-point Buckeyes lead into a seven-point edge for the Badgers, at 51-44, just over five minutes later.
Hayes keyed the run by going 5-for-5 from the floor and pulling down four rebounds during that stretch.
The Badgers still led by six at 54-48 after Frank Kaminsky dropped in a layup with 6:42 to play, but that bucket proved to be the last shot UW would hit from the floor.
Ohio State’s Amir Williams broke a 57-57 tie by going 1-for-2 at the free throw line with 52 seconds remaining and the Buckeyes never trailed again.
Wisconsin went just 6-for-14 at the charity stripe in the second half after connecting on 13 of 15 attempts before halftime.
The Badgers (17-5, 4-5) have dropped three straight games at home for the first time since 1998 and will look to get back on track Wednesday when they travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on Illinois.
