MIAMI, Fla.-- The Wisconsin softball team's struggles continued Friday afternoon at the FIU Classic in Miami, Fla. The Badgers got down early and were never able to recover in an 8-0, six-inning, loss to Florida Gulf Coast. Wisconsin fell, 4-0, to Georgia Southern in its first game of the day at the FIU Softball Stadium.
"It was a tough day for the Badgers," UW head coach Yvette Healy said. "We faced two good teams today."
Florida Gulf Coast and Georgia Southern are a combined 10-1-1 this season, with GSU's only loss coming at the hands of No. 1 Tennessee on opening weekend.
"We didn't hit, pitch or field well today," Healy continued. "It shows us how much work we have to do to be competitive."
Stephanie Peace singled for the Badgers (2-4) in the first inning, but was left stranded on first.
The Eagles (6-0-1) used a two-out double by Kristen Bembnowski in the bottom of the first inning to strike first and score a pair of runs. Bembnowski was able to advance to third on a passed ball and then scored an unearned run on an error by Chloe Miller behind the plate.
A three up and three down second inning by the Badgers gave way to another Eagles' run in the bottom of the frame. FGCU used a leadoff double, a UW error and a sacrifice fly to score its fourth run of the game.
Back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning gave Florida Gulf Coast a 7-0 lead and a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth ended the game early, 8-0.
Taylor-Paige Stewart suffered her second loss of the season, allowing eight runs, seven earned, in five innings of work. Stewart gave up nine hits, struck out seven and walked three.
Amanda Josie held the Badgers to three hits. Josie didn't allow a walk and struck out three.
Peace, Maria Van Abel and Marissa Mersch had hits for the Badgers.
Wisconsin committed two errors, while the Eagles recorded one.
The Badgers continue play at the FIU Classic on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. CT against Florida International.
