COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- A rough start haunted the Wisconsin softball team Friday night at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station, Texas. No. 13 Texas A&M scored a pair of runs in the first inning on its way to a 6-1 win over the Badgers at the Aggie Softball Complex.
A pair of singles followed by a pair of walks and a hit batter scored two Aggies runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Wisconsin (5-6) loaded the bases in the second inning, but Texas A&M (14-4) pitcher Katie Marks induced a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning.
Maria Van Abel willed a run across the plate in the top of the third inning. Van Abel reached base on a bunt single, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Michelle Mueller.
The Aggies countered with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to jump out to a 5-1 lead.
A home run in the bottom of the fifth gave Texas A&M the 6-1 win.
Cassandra Darrah suffered her fourth loss of the season, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing six runs on seven hits. Taylor-Paige Stewart finished the game for Wisconsin, allowing no hits and walking one in 1.0 innings of work.
Led by a pair of hits each from Mueller, Van Abel and Mary Massei, the Badgers scored one run on seven hits.
Wisconsin's weekend at the Texas A&M Invitational continues on Saturday with a game against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 12:15 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex.
