MADISON, Wis. - Eight members of the 2014-15 Wisconsin softball team earned NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the 2014-15 academic year, as announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Tuesday.
Former athletes Maria Van Abel became a three-time winner of the award, while Megan Tancill claimed her second NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete accolade. Current senior Taylor-Paige Stewart became a three-time scholar-athlete and junior Taylor Berry earned the accolade for a second straight season. Senior Katie Christner, junior Sara Novak, junior Marisa Gonzalez and sophomore Brianna Flugaur were all first-time selections for the award.
"We are so proud to have eight athletes named academic All-Americans," Wisconsin softball coach Yvette Healy said. "The award is even more meaningful when you are at such a prestigious academic institution like Wisconsin."
The NFCA recognized 5,493 softball players across seven membership divisions that all earned NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for the academic year. More than 1,000 Division I softball players achieved the honor.
