MADISON, Wis. –
Drew Conner and
Mark Segbers helped give the Wisconsin men's soccer team an early 2-0 lead, but the Badgers conceded three unanswered goals and lost 3-2 at home to Green Bay at the McClimon Complex on Wednesday night.
Conner scored his first goal of the season to open the game's scoring, which Segbers then followed up on minutes later with his second goal of the year. But the Phoenix were able to respond with three straight goals from Audi Jepson, William Nordenstrom and Cheenuj Shong to complete the comeback.
Wisconsin (2-7-0, 1-1-0 Big Ten) had two penalty kick opportunities in the game, but saw the first one saved and missed the second.
"We missed two penalty kicks and we've now given up 18 goals in half a season. We've got to be better defensively and we've got to put away our chances, especially penalty kicks," UW head coach
John Trask said. "We had plenty of chances to make it 3-1. We didn't do it. They hung around and did just enough to get back in the game and win the game. Compliment to Green Bay."
Despite an aggressive start from the Phoenix over the first 15 minutes of play, the Badgers finally found their footing and capitalized on an early offensive opportunity. After
Luc Kazmierczak slotted in a ball from the endline, Conner beat Green Bay goalkeeper Kyle Ihn near post and gave UW a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.
It marked the first goal of the season for Conner and his first run-of-play goal since 2013, as the team captain had two goals last year but both were penalty kicks. Kazmierczak, in his first start of the season, was credited with his second career assist and his first point of the season.
Wisconsin got on the board again just minutes later and made it 2-0 in the 19th minute. Conner slipped a pass into
Tom Barlow at the top of the box, but Barlow was knocked down. However Segbers made an aggressive run in and picked up the ball left by Barlow then beat the keeper from 15 yards out.
His second goal and sixth point of the season, Segbers is now tied with fellow sophomore
Christopher Mueller for the team lead in points.
Not discouraged by the early deficit, Green Bay (2-5-2, 0-1-1 Horizon League) responded and got itself on the board in the 31st minute with a goal from junior midfielder Audi Jepson to bring the score to 2-1.
Just before half, Conner had a chance to score his second goal of the game on a penalty kick and give the Badgers a 3-1 lead before the break, but his shot low and left was rejected with a diving save by Ihn.
Newfound momentum on their side from the penalty kick denial, the Phoenix came out strong to start the second half. Within four minutes of the second half, Green Bay evened the score back up at 2-2 with a goal from William Nordenstrom. The assist was credited to Jepson, his third point of the night.
The Phoenix climbed all the way out of what was once a 2-0 deficit and took the lead in the 56th minute, as Cheenuj Shong scored on a strike from 25 yards out that beat UW goalkeeper
Adrian Remeniuk.
After a Green Bay hand ball, Wisconsin was awarded its second penalty shot of the game in the second half. Mueller lined up to take the potential equalizer, but missed wide left.
Wisconsin resumes Big Ten Conference play on Saturday with a road trip to face Michigan in Ann Arbor at 1 p.m. CT.
