CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas-- The Wisconsin softball team continued its hot play under the Texas sun at the Islander Invitational, with the Badgers sweeping their doubleheader against South Dakota on Friday and improving to 4-0 in Corpus Christi.

In the first game, junior Taylor-Paige Stewart recorded a season-high nine strikeouts in route to a 6-1 Wisconsin win, her second of the season. Freshman Mariah Watts then earned her first career win as a Badger, pitching to a 4-1 victory in game two.

In game one, UW (5-4) recorded five hits to USD's (1-5) four, and committed no errors while South Dakota committed four. Five different Badgers tallied a hit, with Miller driving in a game-high two runs.

The Coyotes went up 1-0 to start, but UW got things going quickly in the bottom of the first, recording three runs and three hits to take a 3-1 lead.

Senior Maria Van Abel singled, stole second and advanced home to get UW on the board, tying it up 1-1. Sophomore Chloe Miller then singled on a bunt, bringing in freshman Kelsey Jenkins to put UW up 2-1. Van Zeeland singled, with Miller advancing to second, and moved on to third on a throwing error by USD's catcher. Miller then slid home to put Wisconsin up 3-1 to end the first.

The Badgers took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second off scores from senior Megan Tancill and freshman Brianna Flugaur. Tancill reached first on a throwing error by USD and then advanced to second. Jenkins reached on a fielder's choice, with Tancill scoring to put UW up 4-1. Flugaur then followed, scoring on a fielding error by the catcher.

In the fifth inning, Stewart recorded back-to-back strikeouts, walked one and the last USD batter flied out to centerfield. Jenkins was walked to begin the fifth before stealing second. A centerfield hit by Miller brought Jenkins home to give UW the 6-1 advantage.

Stewart recorded one final strikeout in the seventh to seal the victory for UW.

With Watts pitching in game two, Wisconsin logged a 4-1 victory over South Dakota to complete the sweep. Six different Badgers recorded a hit, with junior Stefanni LaJeunesse bringing in a game-best two runs.

UW kicked off game two in the same fashion as the first game, taking a quick lead with runs from senior Marissa Mersch and Jenkins. Jenkins and Mersch were both walked with LaJeunesse doubling to right field to bring both home and giving UW a 2-0 lead.

In the second, junior Katie Christner came home to give Wisconsin a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Tancill singled through the right side to load the bases and Stewart followed with a single to centerfield to bring in sophomore Nyah Rodman and give UW a 4-0 advantage.

The Coyotes drove in one run in the bottom of the seventh on a hit by Katie Dinning, but Jenkins secured the win with an out at third base.

Watts tallied one strike out, allowing eight hits and only one earned run to seal her first collegiate victory.

The Badgers are back in action on Saturday, when they return to Chapman Field at 12:30 a.m. to take on UAB.
