WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Wisconsin softball team couldn't overcome two big innings from Purdue early on and dropped its second-straight game to the Boilermakers, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Wisconsin (13-15 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) got on the board first, but the Boilers (21-9 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) followed with four runs in the first two innings that ultimately sealed the victory.
The Badgers recorded just one hit in the loss, while Purdue tallied seven. Sophomore Chloe Miller was the only UW player to connect with a single, while senior Maria Van Abel scored the Badgers' lone run off of two errors from the Boilermakers. Purdue tallied three miscues, while UW did not commit an error.
Van Abel scored UW's sole run in the first inning. After being walked, she advanced to second on an error, then to third off of a sacrifice bunt from junior Stefannie LaJeunesse and finally home on a passed ball.
Purdue's Kaylah Hampton responded with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the first to give the Boilers a 2-1 lead. With bases loaded junior Taylor-Paige Stewart recorded back-to-back strikeouts, forcing Purdue to leave three runners on base.
Wisconsin went down in order in the top of the second. In the bottom of the inning, with two outs and bases loaded, Hampton tallied her second two-RBI double of the day to give the Boilers a 4-1 advantage.
Solid defense and pitching from UW and Purdue held both sides scoreless over the final five innings, giving the Boilers the 4-1 victory.
Stewart (5-8) tallied four strikeouts and allowed seven hits and four runs in 6.0 innings pitched for UW. Purdue's Lilly Fecho gave up just one hit and tallied four strikeouts in her 15th win of the season.
The Badgers close out their three-game series in West Lafayette with an 11 a.m. contest on Sunday.
