MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's softball team closed out its series against Nebraska with a loss, falling 9-0 in five innings to the Huskers on Sunday afternoon at Goodman Diamond.
The Badgers (19-28 overall, 3-14 Big Ten) honored their three seniors, Marissa Mersch, Megan Tancill and Maria Van Abel, before the game. The senior class is the second-winningest class in school history with a record of 133-80.
In addition to Senior Day, it was "Get to Goodman" day and Mersch, Tancill and Van Abel got to play their final weekend home series finale in front of the second-largest attendance ever recorded at Goodman Diamond, with 1,612 fans in attendance.
"They've been an awesome group," UW head coach Yvette Healy said. "Having a crowd like that has a lot to do with having three local kids on the field that are seniors. You've got two local kids and a Chicago kid and I think that really helped. This is one of those years that's really tough and thank goodness we've got seniors like this that they're great kids. They're sticking with us, they buy in, they work hard, so when you know your seniors have your back and they're dedicated, it goes a long way."

"(The atmosphere) was amazing," Van Abel said. "You couldn't ask for more on your last home series senior weekend. To see extra bleachers in the outfield and the stands literally filled with red, that's all our team can ask for. That just shows where Wisconsin Softball is as a program. The climb and the rise that we're making right now. That's pretty cool when you get that many people coming out to watch your last home series."
UW couldn't get bats swinging as the Badgers recorded just two hits to Nebraska's (29-19, 15-5) 11. UW committed two errors, while the Cornhuskers didn't record any miscues.
Nebraska jumped out to a 4-0 lead right away in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Alicia Armstrong and a three-run homerun from Steph Pasquale.
In the bottom of the first after freshman Kelsey Jenkins was walked, senior Marissa Mersch singled through the right side. But Nebraska forced three outs and went into the second inning with a four-run lead.
The Huskers went 1-2-3 in the top of the second. Sophomore Nyah Rodman led off for Wisconsin in the bottom of the inning with a single up the middle. Freshman Brianna Flugaur came into pinch run for Rodman, but Wisconsin couldn't get any momentum going as Flugaur was forced out at second, junior Katie Christner fouled out to left field and freshman Samantha Arents flied out center field.
Nebraska added three more runs in the third inning, with Kaylan Jablonski notching a two-RBI single to give the Huskers a 6-0 lead. The Cornhuskers added one more run off of a sac fly from Kylee Muir.
NU added another run in the top of the fourth (8-0) behind a RBI single from Cassie McClure and one more in the fifth with Armstrong singling to left field to seal Nebraska's 9-0 win.
"They're quality," Healy said. "You look at them they took two-out-of-three at Northwestern last weekend. It was an outstanding weekend for them. So they're playing hot, they're a quality team and they're a legacy."
Junior Taylor-Paige Stewart pitched five innings and allowed 11 hits and nine runs. Stewart logged one strikeout and walked two batters.
Kaylan Jablonski recorded her sixth win of the season, allowing just two hits and no runs in four innings.
