MADISON, Wis. --In the last action at Goodman Diamond for the season, the Wisconsin women's softball team honored the departing seniors with one last valiant effort against nationally ranked border rival Minnesota.  Despite tremendous exertions in both game one and game two, the Badgers fell 7-2 in the first contest and 12-1 in the second game of the doubleheader.

"The seniors gave us so much. They played hard and they had great careers," Wisconsin head coach Yvette Healy said. "You can't hang your head about losing to the Gophers."

In the first match-up, the Badgers ultimately fell 7-2 after a close game through six innings. The Gophers were able to seal the deal with a 3-run inning in the seventh frame to end the game.

"I thought we could have defended better, (we had) only a couple errors on the board, but probably four or five misplayed balls that really would have made the difference," Healy said.

In the top of the first, the Badgers were able to limit the Gophers to two runs after two outs from shortstop Ashley Van Zeeland. Wisconsin then attempted to get on the board in the bottom of the first, and thanks to senior standout Maria Van Abel, they did.

The Maroon and Gold answered quickly with two more runs in the second, and kept the Badgers at a distance by not allowing them to score until the bottom of the fourth inning where they were able to get a run from a huge home run from freshman Kelsey Jenkins. Jenkins' slammer to left center field soared past the back wall, bringing the score to 4-2 with the Gophers still in the lead.

With a scoreless game through innings five and six, the Gophers ended the first game with a triple-run inning after a home run.

With a final score of 7-2, the Badgers headed into the second game with hopes of coming back with a win in the second.

However, the Badgers fell to Minnesota 12-1 in five innings. Despite having the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, Wisconsin couldn't tally a score until the end of the fifth thanks to the Gophers strong defense. The pitcher, Nikki Anderson, threw five strikeouts and allowed UW only four hits in the game.

Brianna Flugaur scored the lone run for the Badgers after she pinch ran for Taylor-Paige Stewart off the point that was fueled by back-to-back singles from Stewart and Katie Christner and an error by Minnesota off of Jenkins' hit.

"They're playing hard and that's fun," Healy said. "I think the team was battling."

However, Minnesota's Sara Groenewegen hit two homers, one in the second and one in the fourth, both over the left center wall, which assisted three Gophers back home.

Annie Davis stepped in for Stewart after she gave up ten runs and 9 hits. Davis allowed three runs and three hits but both combined to strike out three hitters and walk five.

"You won't see any giant moves (for next year), but our girls just keep getting better every year,"Healy  said. "We get the perspective of what it takes to make Wisconsin a great program."

Wisconsin takes off to New Brunswick, New Jersey to play their last regular season series before the Big Ten Tournament against Rutgers May 1-3. The first game is set for a 2 p.m. CT start on May 1.
