MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's soccer team concluded preseason play with a 2-1 loss to Drake at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Saturday.
Despite generating many chances and threats behind 20 shots, including 13 shots on goal, the Badgers were unable to find the back of the net more than once in the game.
"In some ways, this is an excellent end to our preseason in terms of what I saw out of our players today," UW head coach John Trask said. "In the end, soccer can be a cruel game. One or two things can go against you."
Wisconsin scored first in the game on the foot of Mike Catalano in the 37th minute. Following a long throw-in, the sophomore midfielder collected the loose ball in the box, turned and fired a shot past Drake goalkeeper Darrin MacLeod for the score.
Catalano tallied two goals for the Badgers last season.
A relatively slow-paced first half that saw both teams combine for just four shots, UW took its 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half, luck went against UW as it scored an own goal. After a shot was taken by Drake just outside the box, a Badger defender went for the block, but instead deflected the ball past UW goalkeeper Casey Beyers for the own goal in the 78th minute.
"We were unlucky today and scored an own goal, but our response after the own goal was excellent," Trask said. "It wasn't one man trying to make it happen. It was a collective effort to get back into the game. It just didn't come through today, and sometimes that's soccer."
The second half was an explosive one offensively for the Badgers, who recorded 17 shots and 12 shots on goal in the period alone. 2014 All-Big Ten freshmen Tom Barlow and Mark Segbers led the way, as Barlow had six shots in the game and Segbers tallied four.
Drake would score again and pull ahead in the 84th minute, as Nic Jaimes used a long run to dribble his way through the UW defense and score far post past Beyers to pull the Bulldogs ahead late.
Despite its continued offensive pressure and a late push over the final five minutes that included a handful of quality chances to score, UW was unable to equalize. MacLeod played a big part in denying the Badgers an equalizer, as he finished the game with 12 saves.
UW finished with a 20-7 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in the corner kick battle.
The regular season begins at home for Wisconsin when it hosts Butler at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Aug. 28 for a 7:30 p.m. CT game.
