Wisconsin finishes in first after all three races
BARABOO, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's rowing team competed at its home away from home at Devil's Lake State Park against Marietta College and Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), where the Badgers won all three races they participated in.
"Men's rowing has been around since 1852 so many of our competitors are all locked into races that they've had for years so it's tough to get teams to come," said head coach Chris Clark. "So a small Division I program that's on the rise in Marietta came, which was great. As well as MSOE, a D3 varsity program that's only been around for about five years, they came as well"
With evenly distributed teams, UW started strong out of the gates as their top three boats finished 1-2-3 in the first race of the day. Wisconsin's third varsity finished first with a time of 6 minutes and 9.143 seconds, followed by Wisconsin second varsity eight and first varsity eight who finished with times of 6:14.143 and 6:17.968, respectively. Marietta followed at 6:27.652 and MSOE rounded out the race with a time of 6:51.743.
"We took this opportunity for us to take our top 24 guys and mix it up in other words and try to make even boats and battle it out," Clark stated. "It was interesting because there was 11 sophomores out of those 24 guys in those three eights and there was only one that only had one sophomore so it was basically like seniors against the kids.
"I was joking with them and said I'm putting my money on the sophomores but they didn't like that so it was kind of like an emphatic 'I'll show you coach.' The older boat won though with basically all seniors and juniors, except the one sophomore. It was great though and they were happy."
The second race of the day had similarly impressive results as Wisconsin's fourth varsity eight boat finished first with a time of 6:28.705, followed by the two freshman boats that finished with times of 6:38.814 and 6:43.625, respectively. In addition, MSOE finished with a time of 7:23.041.
Wisconsin's varsity four crews rounded out the solid day for the Badgers as the second varsity squad led the way with a time of 6:49.644. UW's third varsity four followed at a time of 6:58.166. The first varsity four (7:09.161) fell just a couple seconds short of third place as Marietta A finished with a time of 7:02.437. The first varsity four crew was followed by MSOE A (7:21.148), Marietta B (7:24.872) and MSOE B (7:40.100).
"This is such a great venue though because it can really be windy but you can still row, plus it can handle crowds," Clark remarked. "And for away teams, you wouldn't think in Baraboo there'd be a lot of hotel rooms but with the Dells you could have hundreds of teams here and they could easily handle it. But mainly it's just that the site is so spectacular."
The Badgers will be back in action on Saturday, April 30 when they head to Boston to try and win the Cochrane Cup over MIT and the Jablonic Cup over Boston University. They'll stay in Boston to take on Northeastern for the Congram Cup on Sunday, May 1.
"Next week will be the fourth week in a row for us which is great but it's also very difficult. We'll head to Boston where we'll have three different races there on Saturday and Sunday against real tough competitors in MIT and then Boston University and Northeastern, neither of whom we've beat in the last three years. But it'll be fun and I'm excited to see how we do."
