Wisconsin wins all but one race in first taste of conference competition
SOLON, Iowa — The No. 12 Wisconsin women's rowing team turned in a dominating performance in its first Big Ten competition of the season, winning all but one of 14 races in a Big Ten Double Dual against Iowa and Indiana on Saturday.
The Badgers started the day by winning six of seven races against No. 16 Iowa, which hosted the dual, and followed that up with a clean sweep of No. 13 Indiana in the afternoon session.
Wisconsin head coach Bebe Bryans altered the lineups between the morning and afternoon sessions, but nearly every combination was working for UW on Saturday.
"We got to see some different lineups. We raced a little bit different lineups in the morning and afternoon and got to see how the boats moved with those changes. We were pretty pleased with the way the team showed up and raced today," Bryans said.
In the morning session, Wisconsin's NCAA boats all grabbed top finishes, including the second varsity eight boat that finished in 6:36.40, pacing Iowa by 17 seconds and just three seconds slower than UW's first varsity eight boat.
In that first varsity eight race, UW topped the Hawkeyes by a little more than seven seconds. The varsity four won its race by less than two seconds with a time of 7:21.90.
The closest race of the morning session happened to be the only one Wisconsin lost during the day, as the third varsity four was nipped by one second, finishing in 7:45.80.
Weather conditions were slightly less favorable in the morning with a brisk start to the day.
"It was pretty cold in the morning," Bryans said. "It was about 28 degrees when we got there, but it warmed up pretty nicely and stayed calm. It was windy, it was gusty, but it was definitely rowable."
As the weather warmed up, so did Wisconsin, and UW disposed of a ranked foe in Indiana in the afternoon session.
Indiana gave Wisconsin its toughest test in the varsity eight, but the Badgers nipped the Hoosiers by a little more than a second with a finish in 6:38.20.
The second varsity eight glided to a victory with a finish in 6:57.40, 10 seconds ahead of IU, while the varsity four came in at 7:35.70, which was a five-second cushion in front of Indiana.
The second varsity four won its race in 7:46.20, while the third varsity four took the first spot with a time of 7:56.60. Both UW novice eights garnered victories by more than 25 seconds.
"We had a good day today," Bryans said. "We were pretty solid top to bottom. I think we had a really good team effort and showed the depth that our team is developing, so we were happy overall with the results."
Wisconsin is back on the water next weekend, as the Badgers travel to the west coast for the second time in three weekends for the Lake Natoma Invitational.
