MANKATO, Minn. – Junior forward Sophia Shaver scored the game-winning goal with 13 minutes left in the third to lead the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey to a 3-2 victory over Minnesota State on Friday.

Sophomore forward Abby Roque got the scoring going just 50 seconds into the first period at the Verizon Wireless Center, burying the puck into the net off a quick pass from fellow sophomore Presley Norby to give the Badgers (7-0-0, 1-0-0-0 WCHA) a 1-0 lead over the Mavericks (1-3-1, 0-1-0-0 WCHA).

However, Minnesota State scored twice in the middle frame, once on a power play and once while at full strength, to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

The Badgers scored twice in a two-minute span in the third to retake the lead as Norby scored her third of the season to knot the game at two.
Shaver scored two minutes later after stealing the puck from a Minnesota State defenseman to net her first career game-winning goal.
 
Three Notes of the Game:
-Roque now has an NCAA-leading 11 points this year off of three goals and eight assists.
-Sophomore Kristen Campbell made 18 saves to earn her NCAA-leading seventh victory of the year.
-Wisconsin has won its last five WCHA openers dating back to the 2013-14 season. UW is now 13-5-1 in its WCHA opening-tilts.

On the win:
"It was a good win. I thought the first part of the game there were moments that we were pretty good and there were moments that weren't very good. Minnesota State played it really tight, which we knew they were going to do, especially in the neutral zone. If you don't manage the puck it makes it a little bit more challenging. At the end of two periods we had a challenge in front of us. You're down a goal. How are you going to respond to that? I thought we came out in the third period and, for the young team that we have, they did a very good job. They scored a couple goals and ended up getting to the end where Kristen made a really nice save on a power play with the goalie pulled to win the game. A good learning opportunity and if you win, it makes it that much more special."

"I just came around, and coach was telling us the whole game to shoot the puck so I was like 'I better shoot this' and thankfully it went in."
 
On the come-from-behind win:
"It's good to come from behind like that. It's a character builder for all of our team. It's good to know we can play from behind and come out with a win at the end."

"It was a great road win. I thought that we really grinded it out at the end. Obviously Minnesota State played tough and had a strong defense but we really got the puck to the net in the third period and finished on our chances"
