Freshmen make their debut

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – As the fall season continues for men's rowing, both freshmen novice four and eight boats placed in the North Star Regatta in Minneapolis last Saturday.

The freshmen novice team dominated on the water, with all seven boats finishing in the top five of each event.

Wisconsin's freshmen novice fours finished one after another with the Badgers' B boat taking the race with a time of 18 minutes, 33 seconds. Wisconsin's A boat followed behind, finishing in 19:04.0, and Wisconsin's C and D boats rounded out the top four, beating out Minnesota's A boat by .40 seconds.

Wisconsin also won the novice eight race as the Badgers' A boat crossed the finish line first with a time of 17 minutes, 11 seconds. Wisconsin's B boat followed in second place and the Badgers' C boat finished with a time of 20 minutes, six seconds to take fifth place.

STRAIGHT FROM THE LAKE:
Assistant Coach Beau Hoopman
"This was the frosh team's first race of the season and it was a memorable one. We arrived in Minneapolis to three inches of snow and 34 degrees. Conditions like that make rowing seem miserable, but once you get moving around weather doesn't really affect you. Practice on Friday was short, and Saturday ended up being decent conditions comparatively, which is why you need to go out in that weather; it makes everything else seem doable. I thought the racing went okay. The results were decent; there was some good racing in the novice events. This early in the year, we're trying to figure out what kind of racers these freshmen are; what they do under pressure, how competitive they are with one another during practice and hopefully that shows when they race. We have another regatta in Indy next weekend; we'll change the lineups a little bit and see how we do."
