Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Badgers squeeze past Orange, 1-0

Roque, Campbell lead No. 1 Wisconsin to series-opening win

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Thanks to a second-period highlight-reel goal by sophomore Abby Roque, the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team dispatched Syracuse, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at the Tennity Ice Pavilion.

Roque put the Badgers (5-0-0) on the board at the 6:35 mark of the second with her second goal of the year. The Sault Ste. Marie, native sliced through the Orange (0-2-1) defense and fired the puck into the top corner of the net to record her third career game-winning goal.
Three Notes of the Game:
- Wisconsin improved to 33-1-0 all-time against the College Hockey American conference, including a 5-0-0 record this year against CHA teams.

- Sophomore Kristen Campbell earned her third shutout of the season, stopping all 20 shots she faced. Campbell, a transfer from North Dakota, has not allowed an even-strength goal this season and leads the country in shutouts (3) and wins (5).

- UW outshot Syracuse 39-20, marking the fifth time this year UW has collected more shots on net than its opponent.

Play of the Game:
UW had to go on the penalty kill twice in the final nine minutes, including an instance with just over two minutes to go in the game. The Badgers held tough, getting multiple clears to hold onto the victory.

Straight from the Rink:
Head coach Mark Johnson
On the win:

"Overall I thought we competed pretty well. The first period was probably the weakest but it's our first road trip playing in a rink that's got different dimensions than what we're used to. We tried to practice and prepare them for what they would see in the first period. For most part, we did a lot of good things but it's a work in progress."
"We created a bunch of good scoring opportunities that we couldn't capitalize on, but it's a good road win. It's Syracuse's first home game and it's our first road trip. A lot of things on the positive end came out of this afternoon's game."

Sophomore forward Abby Roque
On her goal:

"It was a 0-0 game and I saw the play developing where the D started to pinch up on Presley (Norby). I saw Presley going hard and she drew the defense away from me and it gave me a clean lane to the net and I was lucky enough to have the shot go in.

Sophomore goaltender Kristen Campbell
On getting the shutout:
"The team was great. I felt really confident in there just because the D were blocking shots we needed to block and the forwards were getting chips off the wall so I think it was an overall great team effort tonight."

Up Next:
The Badgers and Syracuse wrap up their series at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Tennity Ice Pavilion.
