Wisconsin gears up for Friday’s regional meet

Friday, Nov. 10 | 10:15 a.m. — Terre Haute, Ind.
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's cross country team will return to Indiana once again to compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship meet at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute on Friday. The meet will begin with the women's 6K race at 10:15 a.m. (CT) followed by the men's 10K race at 11:15 a.m.
1. Looking back at last year's regional: The Badgers took home their 29th NCAA Great Lakes Regional title last year thanks to a one-two finish by duo Malachy Schrobilgen and Morgan McDonald, winning the championship with a score of 51.
2. Badgers shine at 2017 Big Ten Championships: : A one-two finish by sophomore Oliver Hoare and senior Joe Hardy contributed to the team's success in landing a third-place overall finish at the 2017 Big Ten Championship. Both Hoare and Hardy earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for their finishes. Sophomore Ben Eidenschink scored next for the Badgers, coming in at 20th overall in his second race of the season. Rounding out the scoring for Wisconsin were sophomore Zack Snider and junior Tyson Miehe, who finished just one second apart to finish 32nd and 33rd, respectively.
3. In the ranks:Â The Wisconsin men's cross country team currently checks in as one of the top thirty teams in the country as ranked by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Coaches' Poll with a No. 25 rank. Other ranked teams will compete at the Great Lakes Regional on Friday, including No. 10 Michigan and No. 15 Michigan State. In addition, UW is currently ranked No. 3 in the Great Lakes Region heading into this week's meet.
4. Super Sophomores: This year's Wisconsin men's cross country team has seen strong performances from its younger members, and will hope to continue this trend on Friday. Sophomore Oliver Hoare has had a successful season, leading the Badgers with an eighth-place finish at the Greater Louisville Classic before winning the Big Ten individual title. Sophomore Ben Eidenschink was the third UW runner across the line at the Big Ten championships while Zack Snider, in his season debut, also scored for the Badgers.
5. Next is NCAAs:Â The Great Lakes Regional meet is the first step to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Kentucky. The top two teams at each regional competition will automatically advance to Louisville while 13 at-large teams will be selected on Saturday. In addition, the four individual qualifiers who aren't already a part of a qualifying team that finish in the top 25 in their region will advance to the national meet.
The national meet will take place on Saturday, November 18 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park starting with a women's 6K race at 9:45 a.m. CT followed by the men's 10K race at 10:45 a.m. The meet will be shown live on FloTrack.
