Senior garners back-to-back honors; Cheung earns second Sportsmanship Award
MADISON, Wis. -- For the second-straight year, senior Brooke Ferrell has earned first team All-Big Ten honors.Â
The Edgerton, Wisconsin, native garnered second-team honors as a sophomore and closed out her collegiate career with back-to-back first-team honors.Â
"We're excited to see Brooke named to the first team again this year," head coach Todd Oehrlein said. "She has played fantastic golf all season and has worked very hard to put herself into that position."
Since the Big Ten separated its honors into first and second teams in 2003, Ferrell is the first Badger to earn multiple first-team all-conference honors. She is also the first Badger to be honored by the Big Ten three times in her career.
Ferrell holds three of the top four single-season scoring averages in school history. After setting the program record last season with a season scoring average of 73.25, Ferrell has shaved a full stroke from her average in her senior campaign and is on pace to reset her mark at 72.25.Â
Ferrell's career scoring average is 74.0, nearly two strokes better than Kris Yoo's school record of 75.74.
Out of the eight tournaments Ferrell competed in this season, she added one tournament title and five top-10 finishes to her resume. The senior's consistency guided the Badgers all season long and helped UW collect five top-five finishes, including the East/West Match Play Challenge title.Â
At the Big Ten Championships, Ferrell tied for 17th overall after finishing the tournament at 8-over.Â
In her four years with the program, Ferrell rewrote the record book. After setting the freshman scoring record at 75.34 strokes per round, she went on to earn the 18-, 36- and 54-hole records (65-137-209) at the 2016 Big Ten Championships.Â
Ferrell has also been a part of two teams that have qualified for the NCAA regional championships (2014 and 2015) and qualified as an individual as a junior.
Fellow senior Michelle Cheung was named the Sportsmanship Award winner for the second-straight year. The Hong Kong native relied on her experience to be a stabilizing force for the Badgers as she competed in seven-straight tournaments.Â
"I'm so proud of everything Michelle has done at Wisconsin," Oehrlein said. "She is incredibly deserving of the honor and she has always represented our program with dignity and class."Â
The Badgers will find out their postseason fate on Thursday at 10 a.m. CT when the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships Selections Announcement is televised on Golf Channel.
