BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore Amy Davis led the Wisconsin women's cross country team as the Badgers opened up their season Saturday morning at the Indiana Open in Bloomington, Indiana.
Davis started her sophomore season off on the right foot, winning the 5K race at the IU Championship Cross Country Course in 17 minutes, 39.9 seconds. A native of Madison, Davis picked up her first cross country victory as a Badger after a few second and third-place finishes as a redshirt freshman during the 2016 season.
Following behind her for the Badgers was junior Erin Wagner, who placed 12th with a time of 18:04.8. Â Sophomore Alissa Niggemann also picked up a top-15 finish with a time of 18:10.8. Â
Wisconsin, which raced in Indiana after spending a week training in Door County finished in fourth with an overall score of 84. Host Indiana won the meet with a score of 40 while Big Ten rival Minnesota was second with 51 points.
 "Today's meet was all about preparing for the future," UW Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne said. "We'll be back here at the end of October for the Big Ten Championships and as in the past, when you prepare well, you put yourself in a good position to be successful when it matters most."
The Badgers will make their way to Bloomington, Illinois next Friday for the Illinois State University Country Financial Invitational. The women will compete in a 5K at 5 p.m. (CT) with the men to race an 8K at 5:45 p.m. Â
