MADISON, Wis. – Freshman forward Brette Pettet recorded a hat trick to lead the No. 2 Wisconsin women's hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Mercyhurst on Friday night.
 
A native of Kentville, Nova Scotia, Pettet became the 29th player in Wisconsin (4-0-0) history to record a three-goal night and the first freshman to accomplish the feat since Annie Pankowski tallied a hat trick on Nov. 13, 2014 against Minnesota State.
 
Pettet wasn't the only Badger to shine as Alexis Mauermann recorded a career-high four points off a goal and three assists to help the UW complete the sweep of Mercyhurst (0-2-0).
 
Mauermann put the Badgers up in the middle of the first period as she found the back of the net amid a scuffle in the crease to give Wisconsin a 1-0 lead over Mercyhurst. 
 
Pettet notched her first goal of the night on a power play with two minutes remaining in the first to put the Badgers up 2-0.
 
Junior Sam Cogan added her second goal of the season five minutes into the second stanza to stretch the Badger's lead to 3-0. However Mercyhurst found the back of the net on a power play late in the second to make it a 3-1 game after two periods.
 
Pettet slotted her second goal of the night past Mercyhurst goaltender Sarah McDonnell early in the third to make it 4-1. The freshman completed her first collegiate hat trick when she intercepted a Mercyhurst clearance and fired the puck into the net with just over five minutes left in the game.
 
Three Notes of the Night:
- Goaltender Kristen Campbell set a career high with 29 saves as the sophomore improved to 4-0-0 in her UW career.
- Wisconsin improved to 17-0-1 in games played in September and 10-0-0 in home tilts during the month.
- The Badgers extended their home unbeaten streak to 16 games. UW has outscored its opponents 80-9 during the run that dates back to Dec. 4, 2016.

"I had individual meetings with all of the young players this week, and one thing I told her was that her shot is good—and it's surprising how good it is because she's not very big, and you saw it tonight. She had seven shots last night and five tonight, she's not afraid to put the puck on net. Those are good signs."
 
On the sweep:
"Mercyhurst competes very hard, they have good work habits. And by playing against that, we make mistakes, but I think by doing that, you learn from them and end up becoming better because of it. I'm very pleased with the weekend."

"We knew they were coming to win and try to get us. It was a hard fought battle after playing Lindenwood and they're another step up, too. It was just really fun to have another challenge."
