FIVE THINGS TO KNOW: MARYLAND

1. TOURNEY TIME: Wisconsin earned the No. 9 seed in the 2018 Big Ten Tournament and will take on No. 8 Maryland on Thursday. UW has advanced to three of the last five championship games, including 2017.
2. COMING TO THE DEFENSE: Wisconsin is playing its fifth game at Madison Square Garden over the last three seasons. In four MSG appearances, Ethan Happ has averaged 19.5 ppg and 8.3 rpg with a career-high 32 points against Rutgers in 2017.
3. COMING TO THE DEFENSE: UW has held its last four opponents to an average of 158 points below their season scoring averages: PUR (-29.5), MINN (-13.5), NW (-5.4) and MSU (-14.6).
4. BALL SECURITY: Wisconsin averaged just 8.9 turnovers per game in the month of February. The Badgers averaged 11.7 TOs per game in the 23 outings prior to February.
5. HISTORIC HAPP: A 2018 first-team All-Big Ten selection, Ethan Happ ranks eighth in Ken Pomeroy's Player of the Year standings. He is the nation's only player leading his team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and steals - a feat that hasn't been accomplished in the Big Ten since 1996.

ALL-TIME vs. MARYLAND

Wisconsin and Maryland will face off Thursday for the first time in a Big Ten tournament. All-time, UW and UMD are playing for the 13th time and the sixth time since the Terrapins joined the Big Ten. UW leads the all-time series, 7-5, but Maryland holds a 3-2 edge since joining the conference.

  • The Badgers and Terrapins have met in some noteworthy circumstances over the last 15 years. Wisconsin's 78-75 overtime win in the 2000 Big Ten/ACC Challenge marked Dick Bennett's final game coaching at UW. The 2002 meeting, an 87-57 Terps win, came in the second round of the NCAA tournament en route to Maryland's 2002 National Championship
  • Highland, Maryland native Charles Thomas grew up just 17 miles from the Maryland campus. Thomas grew up a Duke and Kentucky fan, but attended several Terrapins home games.
  • In four games against Maryland, Ethan Happ has averaged 14.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

UW IN THE BIG TEN TOURNAMENT

Wisconsin is 23-17 (.575) overall in 19 Big Ten tournament appearances, winning championships in 2004, 2008 and 2015.

  • The Badgers have also advanced to the tournament finals four additional years: 2005, 2007, 2013 and 2017
  • UW's three tournament titles trail only Michigan State (5) and Ohio State (4). The Badgers' seven championship game appearances is second to only Ohio State (8).
  • Wisconsin boasts three Big Ten tournament MOPs: Devin Harris (2004), Marcus Landry (2008) and Frank Kaminsky (2015)
  • The Badgers have earned a total of 15 All-Tournament team honors, including Ethan Happ last season. UW trails only Ohio State (21) and MSU (16) in All-Tournament selections.
  • Wisconsin is the No. 9 seed for the first time in tournament history. In fact, the Badgers are playing in a game prior to the quarterfinals for just the second time in school history (also in 1998 as a No. 10 seed).
  • Ethan Happ is the only active Wisconsin player who has scored more than three points in the Big Ten tournament. In four career Big Ten tournament games, Happ has averaged 15.3 points and 9.5 rebounds per game, shooting 52.4 percent overall and 77.3 percent (17-22) at the free throw line. Happ was UW's leading scorer on the Badgers' run to the 2017 championship game, averaging 14.7 ppg and 10.3 rpg over the three outings.

  • Wisconsin led No. 2 Michigan State, 49-47, with 7:18 remaining, but came up just short in a 68-63 loss Sunday at the Kohl Center
  • The Badgers turned it over a season-low four times, but were out-rebounded, 40-28. UW shot just 37.% FG and 5-for-18 from 3-point range, while MSU connected on 43.4% overall and 40% from deep, including a 6-for-6 3FG effort from Cassius Winston.
