Five Badgers honored by Big Ten with Conference awards

Frederic, Kalynuk, Tischke named All-Big Ten Honorable Mention
MADISON, Wis. – The future looks bright for the Wisconsin men's hockey team as a pair of freshmen were among the five Badgers recognized by the Big Ten today when the Conference announced its award winners for the 2017-18 season.
Leading the way for the Badgers were defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk (Virden, Manitoba) and forward Linus Weissbach (Gothenburg, Sweden), who made up one-third of the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
Kalynuk, who also earned honorable mention for the All-Big Ten teams, tied for the Big Ten lead among all freshmen in league play with 18 points on three goals and 15 assists. His 18 points were the most among all Big Ten defensemen.
A seventh-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2017, Kalynuk totaled three goals, 22 assists and 25 points in 37 games, which currently shares third among Big Ten rearguards in all games.
Weissbach, one of five league rookies to score at least 10 goals, finished fourth among Big Ten freshmen with 26 points in all games. The Big Ten First Star of the Week for his performance the first weekend of his college career, Weissbach finished third in Big Ten play among freshmen with 17 points, one shy of teammate Kalynuk and Big Ten Freshman of the Year Mitchel Lewandowski from Michigan State.
A seventh-round draft pick by the Buffalo Sabres in 2017, Weissbach recorded six goals and 11 assists in league play.
Joining Kalynuk and Weissbach on the All-Freshmen Team were MSU's Lewandowski, Minnesota forward Casey Mittelstadt, Michigan defenseman Quinn Hughes and Ohio State goaltender Tommy Nappier.
Joining Kalynuk among the group recognized as All-Big Ten Honorable Mention were junior defenseman Peter Tischke (Hinsdale, Illinois) and sophomore forward Trent Frederic (St. Louis).
Tischke, who earned honorable mention for the second consecutive year, posted a career-high 13 points on two goals and 11 assists. Among the nation's top 15 players with a 2.14 blocks per game average (79 blocks), he led the Badgers on the back end as the team's top defensive defenseman and one of the league's best for much of the season.
Frederic, last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a member of the All-Big Ten Second Team in 2017, was the lone UW forward named to the honorable mention team this year.
A 2016 first-round pick of the Boston Bruins, Frederic led the Badgers with a career-best 17 goals, while collecting 32 points. His point total ranked second on the team, one off the team lead and one off his total from his freshman campaign.
Senior defenseman Tim Davison (DePere) was recognized as Wisconsin's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award-winner. Davison posted a goal and seven points in 31 games during the 2017-18 campaign. He was also a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.
