MADISON, Wis. – With a prematch celebration of Wisconsin senior
Kelsey Grambeau and the final home match of Wisconsin's dual season, the Badgers had a lot of motivation to close out the season with a victory.
However, facing 30th-ranked Ohio State (4-3 Big Ten, 10-6 overall) the Badgers (2-5, 8-11) were unable to find the recipe, falling to the Buckeyes by a score of 5-2.
Junior
Sara Castellano provided a key point for UW, upsetting No. 97 Shiori Fukuda, 7-6, 6-2, giving Wisconsin its second point and closing the deficit to 3-2.
Down just one, Grambeau, playing in front of friends and family for her final match in Nielsen Tennis Stadium, suffered a 7-6, 6-3 loss to Danielle Wolf. The defeat locked up Ohio State's victory.
UW was unable to grab the elusive doubles point, falling into a similar pattern it displayed against Penn State. Leading in No. 1 singles, with the doubles point on the line, freshman
Lexi Keberle and Grambeau fell, 7-6 with a 7-5 tiebreaking set to Ohio State's No. 25 ranked pair of Fukuda and Anna Sanford.
Sophomore
Melissa Pick was the victor of Wisconsin's other point, defeating Maria Tyrina in the No. 4 slot, a position she has played in just four times this season.
Freshman
Lexi Keberle, taking on No. 62 Anna Sanford, fell 6-3, 6-4. Keberle is now 1-3 against nationally-ranked opponents.
Up next: With Wisconsin's home season now finished, UW hits the road for its final four regular-season matches. The first one comes on Saturday, April 15 at 11 a.m. (CT) against Northwestern.
