Younger Badgers lead the way at Indiana Relays

Freshman earns first collegiate victory in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Badgers opened up the first day of competition at the Indiana Relays with its younger members leading the way with a first-time collegiate victory and personal best.
 
Starting things off for UW were freshman Peyton Frankenreider and junior Zach Lorbeck, who both qualified for the final heat of the 600 meter hurdles. Frankenreider earned a personal best time of 8.29 in the event and Lorbeck came through with a time of 8.41 in the preliminary heat to advance to tomorrow's finals. Paul Afflitto also competed in the 60 meter hurdles, narrowly missing out on a qualifying time, finishing ninth in 8.56.
 
Frankenreider also performed in the field, picking up his first collegiate victory in the long jump. The Yorkville, Illinois, native leaped a distance of 23-4 3/4 to seal his win. Paul Afflitto also earned a top-five finish in the event, taking fifth overall with a mark of 22-2 1/2.
 
UW's middle distance squad shone on the track once again, with freshman Colin Enz finishing third overall with a time of 1 minute, 21.81 seconds while teammate Robby Hatch took fifth in 1:22.32.
 
In the field, junior Rashid Coulibaly matched his personal best pole vault clearance, set at last weekend's Larry Wieczorek Invitational, to take fourth overall. Coulibaly cleared 17-2 3/4 to notch his third-straight top-five finish in the pole vault.
 
In the men's 200 meters, freshman Stacey Boyd II won his heat with a time of 22.21 while fellow freshman Sam McHone took third in his heat, crossing the line in 22.68 in his first 200 meters race of the season.
 
Boyd II and McHone also competed in the preliminary heat of the 60 meter dash, with Boyd II finishing eighth overall with a qualifying time of 6.94 and McHone crossing the line in 7.16. Redshirt senior Trent Nytes also competed in the event, finishing with a time of 7.26.
 
The Badgers will be back on the track bright and early tomorrow morning, with action starting at 8 a.m. (CT) with the women's pentathlon 60 meter hurdles and field events to follow at 8:35 a.m.
