Seven Badgers set for national championships in Austin
MADISON, Wis. – Members of the Wisconsin swimming team, seven in total, are all set for the 2019 NCAA Women's Championships this Wednesday through Saturday at the Lee and Joe Jamil Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. Before the Badgers hit the blocks, below are five things to know.
1.Super Seven: For the third consecutive season, seven Badgers women have punched their tickets to collegiate swimming's biggest show – the NCAA championships.
Representing UW in four individual events will be the trio of junior Beata Nelson (100-yard backstroke, 200 backstroke, 200 individual medley), senior Kathleen Coughlin (100 back) and freshman Lillie Hosack (200 free, 200 IM).
With UW having qualified in all five relay events, that threesome will be joined by seniors Emmy Sehmann and Jess Unicomb, junior Megan Doty and sophomore Kelsi Artim.
2. Beata's Back (Again): Your pen would probably run out of ink before fully itemizing Beata Nelson's illustrious junior season.
From defending her Big Ten titles in the 100 backstroke (49.83) and 200 backstroke (1:52.57), garnering Big Ten gold in the 200 individual medley, collecting her second-consecutive Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships award and cruising past the collegiate record in the 100 back (49.67) – it's impossible to overstate Nelson's outstanding 2018-19 season.
Now, Nelson will look to make more history of own and become the Badgers' second-ever national champion – next to Maggie Meyer (2011). And with nation-leading marks in both the 100 back and 200 back (1:48.27), as well as a top-three time in the 200 IM (1:52.27), it wouldn't be injudicious to bet on Beata to do just that.
3. Live Look: Each day's preliminary session will be streamed live via TexasSports.com beginning at 9 a.m. (CT). Finals sessions begin at 5 p.m. each day, with Wednesday and Thursday's events streamed live on ESPN3. The Friday and Saturday finals will air live on ESPNU.
Live results from the meet can be found on the Meet Mobile app and on the schedule page at UWBadgers.com.
4. Stay Social: For additional up close and personal coverage of NCAAs, be sure to follow the Badgers and Twitter (@BadgerSwimDive) and Instagram (BadgerSwimDive).
5. Fast Forward: Also in Austin, the NCAA men's championships is slated for March 27-30. The Badgers will be represented by sophomore MJ Mao (200 breast) and junior Cameron Tysoe (200 back).
