Two-for-Two: Nelson topples American record, wins second NCAA title

Junior Beata Nelson nabs fastest 100 backstroke at 49.18

AUSTIN, Texas – There is only one woman in the history of the 100-yard backstroke to break the 50-second barrier on six different occasions.

On Friday, that swimmer sank the American, collegiate and U.S. open records in the event by just over a half second.

Her name? Beata Nelson

Securing her second NCAA championship in as many days, Nelson jumped out to an early lead in the Friday's 100 back final and didn't look back. The junior finished in a jaw-dropping time of 49.18, the fastest mark in the history of the event.

Nelson, now in a club of one, is the first Badger to bag two national titles.

"I knew I had some pretty stiff competition around me," Nelson said. "But I just stayed in my own lane, worked my walls and fought really hard those last five meters to hit the wall."

"She very familiar in this pool, it's where she (originally) broke the American record back in December," head coach Yuri Suguiyama said. "So I thought it was fitting that she was able to come back here and do it again in March."

After surging to an upset win in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday to claim her first national championship, Nelson entered Friday's race with a different mindset, no longer the underdog.

"Thursday was kind of unexpected, and tonight there was more of an expectation for me to win," Nelson said. "So it was a different feeling, but there was a sense of calmness tonight."

"I think Beata's success last night really allowed her to just race her best this evening," Sugiyama said. "The thing about Beata is that she's not afraid to get out and perform for people."

You're probably wondering what exactly encourages Nelson to out-perform, day in and day out.

Friday, it was a suit malfunction.

"I had a suit rip right before my race, and I had to scramble and find a new one," she said. "That had my adrenaline up a bit."

When Bruce Banner tears his shirt, he becomes the Hulk. But when Nelson tears her suit, she breaks records. Beata smash.

In a quick turnaround, Nelson will turn her focus to Saturday's 200-yard backstroke, another event in which she holds the nation's top time this season.

"With where Beata is right now, both mentally and physically, I think she is just enjoying this competition," Suguiyama said. "So I think she'll go into tomorrow with a lot of confidence."
