Five things to know: No. 40 Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament

Badgers grab two seed, compete Friday

MADISON, Wis. – After a breakout year in non-conference and conference competition, the Wisconsin women's tennis team (17-4 overall, 9-2 Big Ten) has a great chance to show what it's capable of this weekend. After wining nine conference matches, Wisconsin was awarded a No. 2 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will compete on Friday against the winner of Indiana and Iowa in a 2 p.m. CT match.

1. QUICK RECAP: Wisconsin ended the regular season with back-to-back home matches versus Iowa and Nebraska. Ranked No. 42 during that weekend, Wisconsin defeated Iowa 4-2 and Nebraska 4-3. Both matches ended in clutch performances from two different Badgers and resulted in a court storm as the matches were clinched. Wisconsin lost the doubles point in both matches but was able to set the tone in singles and grab the victories.

2. SEASON IN REVIEW: Beginning the season unranked, Wisconsin pieced together an impressive year, ending No. 40 in the official ITA rankings. UW began the season with six straight wins, shutting out four of the six opponents. Wisconsin then suffered two losses in three matches, to Denver and Utah, but defeating DePaul in that stretch. Following the loss to Utah, Big Ten play started up and Wisconsin won three straight, defeating Minnesota, Maryland and Rutgers, all on the road.

A win over Florida Gulf Coast over Spring Break was a good precursor to back-to-back conference wins over Michigan State and Purdue. UW then suffered a 6-1 loss to top-ranked Ohio State but bounced back quickly with a victory over Penn State. Hosting top ranked Illinois and Northwestern gave Wisconsin a 1-1 weekend split. After the upset over Northwestern the Badgers were able to close the season out with wins over Iowa and Nebraska. UW ends with two ranked women: senior Sara Castellano is No. 80 and sophomore Lexi Keberle at No. 123.

3. SCOUTING INDIANA: Given a No. 7 seed in the Tournament, Indiana holds an overall record of 16-10, including 6-5 in conference play. The Hoosiers are coming off of back-to-back wins over Rutgers and Maryland as they head into the Tournament. Indiana's doubles pair of Madison Appel and Jelly Bozovic is ranked No. 69 in the nation.

4. SCOUTING IOWA: The Hawkeyes, a No. 10 seed in the Tournament, hold a 12-11 overall record, including 4-7 in Big Ten competition. Iowa is 1-3 in its last four matches and ended the season with losses to Nebraska, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
