Badgers take on Syracuse in first round, Saturday
MADISON, Wis. – Taking on Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the No. 35 Wisconsin women's tennis team is set to compete on Saturday, 11 a.m. CT in Stanford, California. Posting an 18-5 overall record, including 9-2 in conference play, Wisconsin is in the Tournament for the first time since 2005. Wisconsin will take on the winner of Stanford vs. New Mexico State on Sunday in a 2 p.m. CT tilt.Â
1. TOURNY HISTORY: Wisconsin has qualified for seven NCAA Tournaments in program history: 1988, 1989, 1996, 1997, 2002, 2004 and 2005. In 2005 Wisconsin went in ranked No. 34 but suffered a first round loss to No. 20 William & Mary, 4-1. The furthest UW has ever gone in the Tournament was in 1997 when Wisconsin won its first three matches before being beaten by eventual national champion Stanford.
2. SCOUTING SYRACUSE: Ranked No. 31 in the Nation, Syracuse enters the Tournament with a 13-12 overall record, including 5-9 in conference play. The Orange have two ranked singles players in No. 14 Gabriela Kingston and No. 99 Miranda Ramirez as well as the No. 55 and No. 81 ranked doubles pairs. Syracuse began the season on a four-match win streak before suffering a loss to No. 19 Virginia. The Orange have faced 10 ranked opponents during the season, including a four-match stretch in which it took on Wake Forest, Florida State, UNC and NC State, going 1-3. Syracuse advanced past the first round of the ACC tournament with a 4-3 victory over No. 38 Georgia Tech before losing 4-0 to No. 2 UNC.
3. SCOUTING STANFORD: Ranked No. 3 heading into the Tournament, Stanford holds a 22-1 overall record, including a perfect 10-0 conference mark. Stanford has seven women ranked in the nation, with the lowest ranking being No. 24 in Michaela Gordon and the highest being 119. The Cardinal also have four ranked doubles pairs with the lowest at 19 and highest at 54. Stanford was PAC-12 champions, defeating No. 34 Washington State, No. 15 USC and No. 9 UCLA along the way. The team's one loss was a 4-3 decision at the hands of Georgia, currently ranked No. 1 in the Nation.
4. SCOUTING NEW MEXICO STATE: New Mexico State holds a 15-9 overall record, including 3-2 in conference competition. The team's best stretch came midseason when it rode a four-match win streak prior to suffering a loss to Wyoming but going on to win the next two matches. New Mexico State is coming off a 4-3 victory over the No. 1 seed, Grand Canyon, in the conference tournament.
