MADISON, WIS. - The Badger Invitational came to a close on Tuesday at University Ridge and the Wisconsin men's golf team wrapped up its third and final round with their best round of the tournament.
Junior Sam Anderson led the team for the third-straight day, though he was not the only player who managed to keep his score below par on the final day.Â
Of the five-man team, four of the players shot even par or better here for the last round. Tuesday's final score was an eight-under par 280 strokes, an 11-stroke improvement from Monday and a 19-stroke improvement from Sunday. The team finished in 11th place with a six-over-par 870.
When asked about what Tuesday's performance means for the team, coach Michael Burcin said "We're very deep and the freshmen are super talented, all three of them, so it was good to get help from everybody. It was solid."
Â
Anderson left one final statement on the course for this tournament, shooting a one-under par 71 to finish all three rounds under par. Overall, the Stoughton native finished in ninth place with a six-under par 210 strokes. It was Anderson's career best 54-hole finish and Sunday-Monday combined for his career best 36-hole score (139).
Over the three days, Anderson carded 11 birdies and never left the top-10 players on the leaderboard. His performance at the Badger Invitational is his best finish since taking second at the Pinetree Invitational his freshman year.Â
After Wednesday's round, Anderson was asked how his career best 54-hole score made him feel about the rest of the season and what he was looking forward to. He responded "It gives me a ton of confidence heading into the rest of the season! I'm happy with how I stayed patient every round, even when I got out of position. I'm really excited that we put together five solid scores today. The freshmen stepped up and shot solid scores giving them tons of confidence for the rest of the season as well!"
The best round for the Badgers on Tuesday was shared by freshmen
Sebastian Iqbal and
Coalter Smith. Both shot three-under par 69, an eight-stroke improvement for Iqbal and a five-stroke improvement for Smith from Monday.
On the individual side of things, senior
Nick Robinson shot even par today and freshman
Jack Blair carded an eagle on par-five hole No. 16.
The Badgers continue their season Sept. 29-30 with the Bearcat Invitational at Coldstream Country Club in Cincinnati, Ohio.
