Five Things to Know: Big Ten Match Play

Golf kicks off spring season in Florida
MADISON, WIS.- The Badgers are headed to Florida on on Friday-Saturday to compete in the Big Ten Match Play. Thirteen conference teams are set to compete in a single-elimination bracket at Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida.
Here are five things to know before the team tees of for the first time this spring.
1. Tee Sheet: The Big Ten Match Play is set to take place on both the Conservatory and Ocean courses. The Ocean Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is a 7,201 yd par-72. The Conservatory Course, designed by Tom Watson, is a 7,776 yd. par-72. Round one will start at 7 a.m. CT on Friday, followed by a second round at noon CT. On Saturday, rounds three and four will begin at 7 a.m. and noon again. All rounds will be shotgun starts, with the exception of the championship round being tee times. The tournament is single-elimination style with consolation brackets for rounds two, three and four. Seeds are determined by Golfstat rankings from the fall season.
2. The Lineup: Six golfers will compete in each round with teams being allowed to bring eight players. Wisconsin's travel roster includes Sam Anderson, Griffin Barela, Sebastian Iqbal, Pete Kuhl, Nick Robinson and Coalter Smith. Anderson led the team in scoring, averaging 71.42 strokes in the fall season. Kuhl ranks second, averaging 73.50 strokes and Smith third with 73.58. No. 12 Wisconsin will be facing the No. 5-seed Michigan State in the first round.
3. 2019 Match Play: Last year, the Badgers had a phenomenal run at the Big Ten Match Play. In the first round, No. 12 Wisconsin went 5-1 over No. 5 Penn State. 2019-20 returners Griffin Barela, Pete Kuhl, Sam Anderson and Tom Calbi all defeated their PSU opponents. In the quarterfinals, Wisconsin tied Ohio State 3-3 with Barela and Cameron Frazier winning their matchups. OSU won the tiebreaker and eventually went on to be named Big Ten Match Play Champions. In the consolation match, the Badgers took down No. 8 Michigan State 4-2 with wins coming from Kuhl, Calbi and Frazier. In the fifth place match, Wisconsin fell 4-2 against Purdue to claim sixth place overall, six spots better than their seed. Barela and Calbi defeated their Purdue opponents.

5. Look Both Ways: To end the fall, Wisconsin traveled to the Bahamas to compete in the White Sands Intercollegiate where the team finished in ninth place. Individual entry Nick Robinson shot the lowest for the Badgers and finished the tournament tied for ninth with an eight-under-par 208. Looking ahead, the team will have a month off before the season picks back up again. The next time out will be the General James Hackler Collegiate Championship at the Dunes Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on March 9-10.
