Wisconsin beats Drake and Northern Illinois in home opener
MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's tennis team opened its home season in exciting fashion, sweeping the Drake Bulldogs, 7-0, and defeating the Northern Illinois Huskies, 6-1.
Wisconsin started out the day against Drake taking the doubles point and all six singles matches. Melissa Pick and Ava Markham dominated early to beat their Drake duo, 6-2 alongside Charmaine Seah and Christina Zordani taking their doubles match, 6-2.Â
In singles play, Wisconsin got off to a hot start will all six opening sets to give the advantage to the Badgers though the rest of the match. Pick and Seah won their first sets in straight games, 6-0. Markham battled all the way through after a tight 2-2 standoff with her Bulldog opponent.
The Badgers finished off the Bulldogs without dropping a singles set, taking the match 7-0.
Moving on to NIU, UW started off strong with a clean sweep in doubles, claiming the point after Ava Markham and Melissa Pick defeated their opponents, 6-2. Antonela Stoica and Anna Makarova earned a 6-4 win and Christina Zordani and Xinyu Cai dominated their match, 6-0.
In singles action, the match was clinched by Zordani's win over Paula Veyhle, 6-1, 6-1, earning the Badgers their fourth point. Cai, Seah, Stoica, and Markham each defeated their opponents in two straight sets, which included Stoica's sweep of Brodie Walker.Â
