CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – On
the first day of the 2020 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, the Wisconsin Softball team (6-5) went 0-2 in games against No. 2 Washington and San Diego State University. The Badgers lost to the No. 2 Washington Huskies 3-5 and then went on to play extra innings in a 2-3 loss against the Aztecs.
#2 Washington
The Badgers had a busy top of the fourth inning, where they scored the first three runs of the game and took the initial lead. It started with a single from
Caroline Hedgcock.
Tyra Turner would go in for Hedgcock to pinch run and stole second.
Stephanie Lombardo reached first on a wild pitch, which led to Turner advancing to third and
Jolie Fish to pinch run for Lombardo. The freshman third baseman,
Fiona Girardot, hit the double that would bring in both the pinch runners and give the Badgers a 2-0 lead over the No. 2 Huskies.
The final score for the Badgers came when
Abby Herbst stepped into pinch hit and had a single that brought Girardot home.
Despite two double plays by Wisconsin's defense, Washington found ways to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 3-3 tie game.
In their last at-bat, the Badgers couldn't find a way to score. In the bottom of the seventh, Washington hit a two-run walk-off home run to finish the game after trailing the entirety of the game.
Kaitlyn Menz pitched for the Badgers and had three strikeouts.
San Diego State
UW fell late in a nine-inning thriller against San Diego State University.
Stephanie Lombardo hit the two-run homer that would end up being the only points scored for the Badgers.
At the bottom of the first inning,
Kayla Konwent was walked and
Alli Clark came in to pinch run before Lombardo hit her ball out of the park.
A solo home-run came from the Aztecs in the third inning, and another run in the fourth inning would tie the game.
The two teams battled back and forth, and after still being tied at the bottom of the seventh, the game went into extra innings.
San Diego State scored in the top of the ninth, and Wisconsin couldn't answer that run when it was their turn to bat.
Haley Hestekin started for the Badgers in the circle and threw a single strikeout before sophomore
Maddie Schwartz came in to pitch in the fifth inning. She threw four strikeouts.
Kaitlyn Menz would come in at the eighth inning and closed out the game for UW in the circle.

The Badgers will face UC Davis at 2 p.m. CT, followed by the reigning NCAA champions and current No. 1 seed, UCLA at 5 p.m. CT.
