Feelin' Fresh: Bacon and Benson start their careers with Big Ten Honors

Badgers collect both Freshman of the Week honors, Women's Swimmer of the Week
MADISON, Wis. – After winning the tri-dual meet against Minnesota and Purdue over the weekend, freshmen Andrew Benson and Phoebe Bacon continued to rack up the awards with this week's Big Ten Honors.

Andrew Benson was named Freshman of the Week, while Bacon, was named Swimmer and Freshman of the Week. The two freshmen had outstanding performances after their much-anticipated debut as Badgers.

Benson, hailing from Newmarket, New Jersey, had two individual wins. He won the 100 Free (43.43) and the 200 IM (1.57.80).

Bacon had quite the day as well winning all three of her individual events. The Bethesda, Maryland native won the 100 backstroke (52.27), the 200 backstroke (1.53.87), and the 200 IM (1.46.64).

The two helped their teams to dominating wins on Saturday with the men's swim and dive team defeating Purdue and Minnesota 157.0 to 143.0 and 165.0 to 135.0 respectively and the women's team crushing Purdue and Minnesota 191.5 to 104.5 and 163.0 to 133.0 respectively.

Bacon and Benson and the rest of the Badgers swim and dive team will take on their next opponents, Northwestern and Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 6 in another Big Ten contest held in Madison, Wisconsin at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center.
