MADISON, Wis. — The 10th-ranked Wisconsin men's cross-country team travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, to compete in the Big Ten Championships. The Badgers are looking to uphold their legacy and claim their 52nd title. UW has won more championships than all other conference teams combined. The men's 5.2 mile race takes off at 10:45 a.m. CT on the Penn State Golf Course.
1. Defending Champions: Last year, Wisconsin won its 51st Big Ten Championship and third consecutive title. Redshirt freshman Rowen Ellenberg led the Badgers to victory with his third-place finish in 24 minutes, 11.1 seconds with Jackson Sharp crossing the line just 0.6 seconds behind to seal fourth place in 24:11.7. Charlie Wheeler and Bob Liking also finished in the top-20 with their sixth and 12th-place finishes, respectively. Ellenberg, Sharp and Wheeler all earned first-team All-Big Ten honors while Liking was a second-team selection. All four Badgers will compete on Friday alongside other Big Ten competitors Shuaib Aljabaly, Evan Bishop, Olin Hacker and Seth Hirsch.
2. A top-tier season: The Badgers are looking strong heading into the postseason with two race wins and a top-four finish at the Nuttycombe under their belts. Liking led Wisconsin at the Nuttycombe with his fifth-place finish by running a personal best of 23:27.1, beating his previous time by more than a minute.
3. Scouting the competition: Wisconsin is the highest ranked school in the Big Ten and the only Big Ten school to be ranked among the top-10 nationally. Other ranked schools -- No.15 Michigan and No.29 Minnesota -- are among the teams to watch on Friday. Both the Wolverines and the Gophers competed at the Nuttycombe where they finished eighth and 15th, respectively.
4. 10-Time Coach of the Year: Director of men's and women's track and field and cross country Mick Byrne is looking to lead the Badgers to another victory this week. Byrne has led the Badgers to 10 Big Ten titles, 11 NCAA appearances, and one NCAA team title. He has also coached 45 first-team All-Americans, 25 Big Ten individual champions and six Big Ten Freshman of the year.
