Wisconsin look to start first week 2-0
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin women's basketball team is set to host its second game of the 2021-22 season Sunday afternoon at the Kohl Center as they take on the NJIT Highlanders. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and here is everything you need to know before tuning in:
1. FRESHMAN ON FIRE: Badger freshman guard Krystyna Ellew marked her name in the Wisconsin record book in her first game as a Badger against St. Thomas. The Chicago native led all scorers on Wednesday with 29 points, shooting 9-15 (.600) from the field, including 3-5 (.600) from 3-point range and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Ellew started to find her shot in the second quarter versus the Tommies, scoring 15 points in the second period alone. Ellew added five rebounds, a block and a steal to her overall stat line from Wednesday's matchup.
2. WELCOME TO WISCONSIN: Wisconsin Head Coach Marisa Moseley and staff picked up their first win as Badgers Wednesday versus St. Thomas. The new coaches staff are all completely new to Wisconsin as Moseley and Assistant Coach Kate Barnosky both came from Boston and Associate Head Coach Scott Merritt came from Illinois. While all three of these coaches have years of experience and previous wins under their belt, Assistant Coach Caroline Doty picked up her first career win as a collegiate coach in her first game as a collegiate coach.
3. LAST TIME OUT: While the Badgers were able to capitalize on huge offensive outputs from Ellew, improved shooting and team play across the board was just as big of a contribution to Wisconsin's first win of the season. The Badgers were able to outscore the Tommies in multiple team categories including netting 32 points in the paint, 20 points off of turnovers and 14 points from the Wisconsin bench. In addition, Wisconsin was 12-13 (.923) from the free throw line.
4. SCOUTING NJIT: With two games under their belt, the NJIT Highlanders sit 0-2 with losses to Wagner and Marquette. The Highlanders struggled from the 3-point line against Wagner and are a low scoring team in general, totaling just four wins last year and only scoring over 70 points in two games. NJIT's leading scorer is junior guard Kenna Squier. Averaging around 10 points per game last season and so far this season, Squier will be the main defensive assignment for the Badgers to shut down.
5. HOW TO WATCH: Sunday's competition plays host to the first Sunday Kids' Day at the Kohl Center. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and buying one general admission adult ticket at $5, earns one free general admission youth ticket.
