Golf set to start season at Erin Hills
MADISON, Wis.— Wisconsin men's golf is set to compete in its first tournament of the season. Marquette is hosting the Marquette Intercollegiate on September 5-7.
Here are the five things to know before the team tees it up to start the season:
1. Gearing Up for Golf: The Badgers welcome two fresh faces and eight returners from last season. Griffin Barela, Cameron Huss and Coalter Smith were named Big Ten Golfers to Watch for the 2021-22 season earlier this week and the team's three top-returners. Additionally, head coach Mike Wilson and assistant coach Zack Siefert will make their competition debuts with Wisconsin at the Marquette Intercollegiate.
2. The Course: The Marquette Intercollegiate is hosted at Erin Hills Golf Course. The course was designed by Michael Hurdzan, Dana Fry and Ron Whitten in 2006 and is currently ranked No. 46 on Golf Digest's Top 100 US Golf Courses and is the ninth-ranked public course in the United States. Erin Hills hosted the U.S. Open in 2017 and is set to host the U.S. Mid-Am in 2022 and the U.S. Women's Open in 2025.
3. The Tournament: The tournament will be 54 holes of stroke-play starting off holes No. 1 and 10 all three days. Sunday and Monday tee times are 9 - 11:20 a.m. and Tuesday tee times are 8:30 - 10:50 a.m. Wisconsin, host Marquette and Northwestern are the only three schools to have competed in the tournament all eight years of its existence. The last time it was hosted was 2019 and Wisconsin finished 12th with a team score of 893 (+29). The team's best finish at the Marquette is sixth place which the team did in both 2014 (895, +31) and 2015 (882, +18). Marquette is also putting on an individual event which will be held at Washington County Golf Club on September 5-6.
4. The Field: Competing in the eighth Marquette Intercollegiate are East Tennessee State, Houston, Iowa, Kansas, Liberty, Marquette, Minnesota, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Purdue, South Florida, Texas A&M, UC Davis, Southern California and Wisconsin. Playing for the Badgers are Griffin Barela, Cameron Huss, Graham Moody, Robbie Morway and Coalter Smith. Badgers competing in the individual event are Jacob Beckman, Cameron Frazier and Ryan Smith. Wisconsin will tee off hole No. 1 from 10:40- 11:20 a.m. on Sunday.
