MADISON, Wis – The Wisconsin men's soccer team pulled off a thrilling comeback in their first Big Ten win of the season against Michigan tonight at McClimon Soccer Complex.
Straight from the Pitch – Head Coach Neil Jones
"It was a big win for us and gave us three points that we needed. We have been a little bit unlucky I think with some of our games like the red card against Rutgers. I thought our guys were really great tonight. Credit to our guys for fighting back and getting that equalizer along with the winner."
How it happened
The Badgers took on the Michigan Wolverines tonight in an action packed Big Ten game that saw the boys come away with their first Big Ten win of the season. Not only was it the first win of their Big Ten campaign, but it was also Head Coach
Neil Jones' first conference win at Wisconsin.
Both sides were going at it the entirety of the first half, with it being pretty evenly split. Both teams had their opportunities to go up but to no avail; the score going into the half was 0-0. Michigan then struck first in the 60th minute off of a set piece. The Badgers did not wait to respond, equalizing in the 72nd minute off of a cross by
Eliot Popkewitz that
Jack Finnegan put in the back of the next.
A little over a minute later the Badgers struck again, this time coming off of a great run from
Tim Bielic who fed the ball to
Maxwell Keenan. The junior made it count and buried his shot in the bottom right corner for the game winner. The sheer grit and determination of the team showed through tonight, capping off a very impressive performance.
Notes
- In his second start of the season, junior defender Eliiot Popkewitz got his first career assist
- Junior transfer Maxwell Keenan tallied his fifth goal of the season, the most for a Badger since Noah Melick had six during the 2018 campaign
- The total attendance for 'Pac the Mac' was 837 people
- The Badgers had 14 total shots compared to Michigan's three
