Badgers fire a season-high 44 shots on goal
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team fell to the Michigan State Spartans (5-3-1, 1-1-1 0-0-1 Big Ten) at Munn Ice Arena on Friday.
Despite posting a season-high 44 shots on goal and holding a 44-35 edge in shots for the game, UW finished on the short end of a 5-0 game.
Michigan State's Erik Middendorf netted two goals within 15 seconds to give MSU a 2-0 lead in the first period. Cole Krygier skated the puck behind the Badgers' goal and fed a pass to Justin Jallen in the blue paint who took a shot for Middendorf to net the rebound. Middendorf scored his second tally on a direct feed across the zone from Matt Basgall.
The Badgers (2-7-0, 0-3-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) started the second period on a five-minute power play but were unable to convert on that man advantage or a two-minute one that followed.
Middendorf made it 3-0 on its lone second-period power play with his third goal of the game at 13:23 of the second period. Nash Neinhuis got control of the puck deep in the Badgers' zone and connected with Jesse Tucker on the blue line, who set up Middendorf for a one-timer on the right side.
Michigan State's Tanner Kelly scored on a two-on-one with Jagger Joshua to put the Spartans up 4-0 heading into the third period.
