CORALVILLE, IOWA - Wisconsin assistant coach Seth Gross — a former NCAA Champion and three-time NCAA All-American — wrestles this weekend in Iowa at the 2022 World Cup with Team USA's senior men.
Gross is competing in the 61 kilogram men's freestyle competition down in Coralville at XTream Arena with USA Wrestling. More information can be found at https://worldcupiowacity.com.
The World Cup is the annual international dual meet championships. This will be the first time in history that the Men's Freestyle World Cup and the Women's Freestyle World Cup events will be held side-by-side.
The top five countries who have qualified for the 2022 Men's Freestyle World Cup are the United States, Iran, Japan, Georgia, and Mongolia. The top five countries who have qualified for the 2022 Women's Freestyle World Cup are Japan, United States, China, Mongolia, and Ukraine. Each side also has an All-World Team represented by top athletes whose countries did not qualify.
Qualifying countries are determined based upon the overall team results from the Senior World Championships events held earlier each year. The 2022 Senior World Championships were held in Belgrade, Serbia in September. The 2023 Senior World Championships will be hosted in Russia.
Team USA will wrestle Mongolia at 10 a.m. CT on Saturday, Dec. 10 and then Georgia at 6 p.m. that evening. Third-place and first-place matches will occur on Sunday, Dec. 11.
Wisconsin sent two Badgers to the senior World Championships this summer in Belgrade. Gross finished fifth overall at 61 kilograms and helped Team USA win the world title. He had previously won the 2022 FinalX title with an upset of 2021 World silver medalist Daton Fix to earn his spot on the World Team.
Current Badger Braxton Amos also competed in the senior men's Greco-Roman bracket at 97 kilograms after earning a late qualification and finishing runner-up at the 2022 FinalX.
