MADISON, Wis. – After a sweep against Michigan State last weekend in Madison, the Wisconsin softball team continues its homestand this weekend with a battle against No. 25 Nebraska at Goodman Diamond. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon before wrapping up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Fans are recommended to follow @BadgerSoftball on Twitter for the most up-to-date information.
Friday's game will feature a Bucky Book giveaway while fans who come to Saturday's game will receive complementary "Get to Goodman" stickers.
1. LAST TIME OUT: The Badgers took the series sweep of Michigan State in their return to Goodman last weekend, beating the Spartans 3-2 Friday, 8-5 Saturday and 8-0 in six innings Sunday. Maddie Schwartz was yet again the standout pitcher for the Badgers in the circle as she threw 17 out of the 20 innings on the weekend, totaling 20 strikeouts while only allowing 11 hits. Her weekend ERA ended at 1.24, dropping her season ERA to 2.24.
2. SCHEDULE UPDATE: The Badgers were originally scheduled to play a midweek doubleheader this week against Minnesota, but the series was postponed due to weather in the forecast. The two Border Battle rivals are working on rescheduling the series.
In addition, UW and Nebraska were supposed to open their series on Friday, but the game was postponed due to rain in Madison.
3. AGAINST RANKED TEAMS: This marks the eighth time that UW has faced a ranked team this season and the first time the Badgers have battled a ranked foe since February. UW is 2-5 this year against ranked teams, including wins against then No. 12 Clemson and No. 24 UCF. The Badgers have also played against two teams that at the time they played were receiving votes, that have since moved into the rankings including beating current No. 22 Notre Dame.
4. HOME, SWEET HOME: The Badgers are 5-1 at Goodman Diamond this season after earning a series win against Indiana to open the month of April before sweeping Michigan State this past weekend. UW has outscored its opponents 36-20 in Madison while Maddie Schwartz has 30 strikeouts in six appearances at Goodman Diamond. Ally Miklesh has 10 hits in Madison and 7 RBI while Fiona Girardot and Kayla Konwent each have nine hits at Goodman.
5. KAYLA IS KRUSHING IT: Kayla Konwent has been on fire in Big Ten play, hitting .613 in league games with a 1.323 slugging percentage. She has been walked 15 times in league games, including 12 intentional free passes. She enters this week one home run shy of Chloe Miller's career home run record of 31 dingers. In addition, the Salem, Wisconsin, native ranks fifth in school history in doubles with 36.
On Wednesday, Konwent was named to the Top-25 Finalist list for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year for the second time in her career.
