Badgers end Cornhuskers streak

Wisconsin takes both games, snaps 18-game Nebraska winning streak

MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin softball team notched a pair of wins over No. 25 Nebraska in front of a packed Goodman Softball Complex.

Leading the way for the Badgers (25-11, 10-4 Big Ten) was Maddie Schwartz as the Badgers' ace started both games against the Cornhuskers (33-11, 13-2 Big Ten) and improved to 20-5 in the circle for UW this season.

Game 1
An Ally Miklesh single to left field drove in Morgan Kummer to break the Cornhuskers winning streak and give Wisconsin a 3-2 win. The walk-off hit marked the third ranked victory for UW this year.

Badgers ace, Maddie Schwartz, held the hot Huskers' bats to two runs on five hits.

Nebraska held an early 1-0 lead, but in the bottom of the fourth a Peyton Bannon bunt puzzled the visitor's infield and allowed Lauren Foster to cross the plate. One hitter later, the Badgers added a run with another bunt - this time coming from a Christaana Angelopolus bunt to score Molly Schlosser.

The Huskers tied up the matchup in the sixth, but the Badgers did not let the lead hold up as they beat Cornhuskers, who previously were undefeated in Big Ten Conference action.

Game 2
Wisconsin led the entire time in the second game and pulled out a 5-2 win.

Sophomore Skylar Sirdashney got the scoring party started in the second inning with a base hit to right field, aiding Bannon to home plate.

In the following inning, UW pushed the lead to 4-0. Schlosser sent a deep shot to right center for an RBI triple, scoring Foster. Bannon's base hit drove in Schlosser and Bannon scored on a fielder's choice sac-fly from Ellie Hubbard.

Nebraska plated a run in the fifth and another in the sixth.

UW added a run in the sixth to answer the Cornhuskers comeback attempt. The insurance came from an error in right field allowing Hubbard to score and cap off a successful day at Goodman for the Badgers.

Schwartz dealt another complete game victory securing her 20th win of the season. The victory puts her as one of five Badgers to secure that many in a single season.

She allowed two runs, only one of which was earned, on seven hits and a walk.

Batting Cleanup
- Three Badgers scored two runs on the day (Molly Schlosser, Lauren Foster, and Peyton Bannon). Bannon led UW with two RBI's as well.
- The Badgers improved to 7-1 at Goodman Diamond this season and have won all three series they've played in Madison.
- The series win over Nebraska marks the fourth straight series win for Wisconsin over the Cornhuskers.
- Kayla Konwent, the Big Ten leader in on-base percentage, got on base five times, including four walks.

Straight from the Diamond
Head Coach Yvette Healy
On the full capacity crowd at Goodman Softball Complex:

"Oh my gosh, it felt like 2,000. The fans were loud. I think the players couldn't wait to play in front of the fans and it was just such great energy. I really think we played great defense more than anything and the crowd was into those defensive plays."

On Maddie Schwartz's dominant performance:
"Maddie Schwartz, as a senior, she is just such a workhorse. She is busting it out there. She wants the ball. She is just in control. Honestly, I just thought she just kept looking better. She was just exciting to watch and in the last inning to put up a zero like that... what a big deal."

Senior Pitcher Maddie Schwartz
On breaking Nebraska's 18-game winning streak:

"I think streaks are meant to be broken and if it was going to be someone it was going to be us. I'm really proud of our defense coming out and shutting it down and getting it done on offense as well."

Up Next: Wisconsin will look to sweep No. 25 Nebraska as they close out the series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and can be viewed on BTN+
