Five Badgers finish in the top-15 to claim program's 12th Griak crown

MINNEAPOLIS -- For the 12th time in program history, the Wisconsin men's cross country team claimed the team title at the Roy Griak Invitational thanks to a dominant performance on Friday morning at the Les Bolstad Golf Course.

The seventh-ranked Badgers finished with 39 points thanks to five runners placing in the top-15, 31 points ahead of California Baptist and 33 points ahead of Big Ten rival Michigan State. It marked the first time UW won the team title at Griak since 2004.

Senior Jack Meijer kept a steady pace through the meet as him and reigning Big Ten champion Bob Liking both crossed the line in 24 minutes, 18.5 seconds to finish in fifth and sixth, respectively. Senior Jackson Sharp placed seventh with just a minute later in 24:19.5.

Not too far along for the Badgers were finishers Charlie Wheeler in 12th at 24:26.2, Evan Bishop in 14th place at 24:26.7, and Shuiab Aljabaly finishing in 24th with a time of 24:48.4.

"Our focus for September is training. When you are training hard, switching gears to racing can be a challenge and not all athletes respond the same way. It's early in the season to look too deep into today's result. We had some men and women switch gears and race well today.
"It's important that we trust the process and keep things in perspective right now and stay focused on our goals."

The Badgers will travel to Chicago to compete at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational next Friday at 1 p.m.
