MADISON, Wis. – Behind eight event wins, the No.12 Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team leads Michigan and Arizona after the first day of a triangular meet at Soderholm Family Aquatic Center. The Badgers lead No.14 Michigan, 120-85, and Arizona, 159-37.
Rookies continue winning ways
Freshman
Maddie Waggoner continues her dominance in the 1000 freestyle, winning the race for the second time this season, touching in 9 minutes, 47.30 seconds. She was closely followed by junior
Paige McKenna, who placed second in 9:48.13. Waggoner also picked up a second-place finish in the 400 individual medley, hitting the wall in 4:18.44.
Freshman
Hailey Tierney kept up the freshman dominance in the pool, winning the 50 free in an NCAA "B" cut time of 22.45.
Blair Stoneburg placed fifth in 23.33 and
Abby Wanezek placed sixth in 23.35.
Bacon wins two
Senior
Phoebe Bacon was the only double-event winner on the day, winning the 200 back in an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:54.44 and 100 butterfly in a NCAA B cut of 53.10.
In the back,
Mackenzie McConagha took third in 1:58.13 while in the fly, Tierney finished third in 54.00 and McConagha was fifth in 54.44.
Junior
Abby Carlson picked up another NCAA "B" cut time, hitting the wall first in the 200 free in 1:47.03.
Blair Stoneburg was the only other Badger in the event, placing fifth in 1:50.61.
In the breaststroke,
Hazal Ozkan won the 200 breast with an NCAA "B" cut time of 2:13.76.
Callahan Dunn placed third in 2:18.02 followed by a fourth-place finish from
Katie McClintock in 2:18.08.
Badger Relays
Wisconsin started the night off strong, winning the 400 medley relay. The team of Bacon, Ozkan, Mconagha, and Tierney finished in 3:37.70.
Abby Wanezek, Tierney, Bacon, and Stoneburg ended the night for the Badgers just as strong as they started it, winning the 200-free relay in 1:30.83.
