Wisconsin falls to No. 24 Oregon Ducks

Badgers comeback comes up just short

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - The Wisconsin softball team came up just short against the No. 24 team in the country, the Oregon Ducks, with a final score of 4-2.

Katie Keller started out hot as she singled to right field during the first at-bat of the game. The transfer stayed consistent in the one spot for the Badgers as she finished 3-4 on the day.

The Oregon Ducks got their bats going in the bottom of the second and capitalized on errors by the Badger defense to put up three runs in the inning. Wisconsin responded right back with back-to-back doubles by Kayla Konwent and Payton Bannon in the top of the third.Bannon's rope down the third base line scored pinch runner Marytherese Nevin to cut the lead down to two.

The Ducks scored again in the bottom of the fourth, making it 4-1, yet once again, Wisconsin responded in the top half of the inning with a walk and another single by Keller. With Konwent up to bat, the Ducks intentionally walked the 2022 First Team All-Big 10 player, and load the bases for Bannon. The Spring Gove (Ill.) native crushed a grounder to the Ducks' shortstop that pinch runner Katie Linkletter was able to beat out at home and cut the lead in half. The bases remained loaded with no outs, but the Badgers were unable to capitalize on the opportunity and scored just the one run in the inning.

Keller looked to spark a seventh inning comeback by starting the inning with a leadoff single, but the Badgers could not rally late and fell by a final score of 4-2 in favor of the No. 24 Ducks.

Maddie Schwartz started at the mound and pitched two complete innings, giving up three runs and three hits in 11 batters faced. Gabi Salo came in for one inning and produced two strikeouts, giving up one run in just five batters faced. Touted freshman Paytn Monticelli finished the game throwing three complete innings while striking out four.

Molly Schlosser also finished the game with one hit, going 1x2.

Wisconsin will prepare to face another top-25 team tomorrow in Ole Miss who is currently ranked No. 23. The game will start at 6:00 p.m. CT for the Badger's final battle in Puerto Vallarta.
