MADISON, Wis. – The No. 20 Wisconsin women's track and field team continues its indoor season at the Big Ten Conference Championships in Geneva, Ohio. The meet runs from Friday through Saturday at The Spire. Friday's events start at 10:30 a.m. CT and 9:45 a.m. on Saturday CT.
Here are five events to watch this weekend.
1. WATCHING THE RANKINGS: Wisconsin is one of three Big Ten teams ranked in the USTFCCCA Top-25 National rankings, released Feb. 21 -- No. 17 Nebraska, No. 20 Wisconsin and No. 25 Minnesota. In the USTFCCA conference rankings, the Badgers come in second in the Big Ten. Michigan leads the rankings while Ohio State, Minnesota and Iowa round out the top five, respectively.
2. THROWING DOWN WITH THE BADGERS: Wisconsin looks to score well in the throws this weekend as redshirt-junior Chloe Lindeman and graduate student Josie Schaefer are both ranked second in the weight throw and shot put, respectively.
Lindeman sits first all time at Wisconsin in the weight throw at 78 feet, 0 inches while senior Olivia Roberts ranks fifth in the Big Ten and fourth at Wisconsin with a throw of 71-5 1/4 . Lindeman and Roberts went 1-2, respectively, at the 2022 Big Ten Championships. The Badgers have two other throwers ranked in scoring position heading into the championships -- redshirt freshman Abby Peeler is seventh at 68-8 1/2 while redshirt sophomore Chikere Oduocha is seventh at 68-1.
In the shot put, Schaefer broke her own indoor school record last weekend with a throw of 61-0 1/4. Sophomore Danni Langseth will also compete in the shot put, ranking 12th in the Big Ten at 52-2 3/4.
3. HURDLING HUVEN: Senior Destiny Huven looks to move up in the 60-meter hurdles after finishing fourth in 2022. She ran 8.37 in the finals last season, and has improved her own school record to 8.08 this season. Huven is currently ranked first in the conference.
Junior Kiley Robbins leads Wisconsin in the 60-meter dash, facing a strong field this weekend. Robbins finished third two weekends ago at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, running a school-record 7.29 which currently ranks sixth in conference.
4. MULTI-EVENT STARS: The Badgers have two of the top-five performers in the pentathlon entering the championships. Freshman Shaina Zinter ranks fourth with 3,861 points, the best performance by a UW freshman, while junior Mackenzie Heyroth sits fifth with 3,786 points.
5. LAP, LAPS, AND MORE LAPS: Wisconsin has some of the top entries in the distance events as five Badgers currently sit in the top 10 in the 5,000 meters. Shea Ruhly ranks third in 16:16.62, Samantha Stieve sits fifth in 16:29.12, followed by Alexa Westley in seventh in 16:35.77.
