ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The 23rd-ranked Wisconsin men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the Big Ten Conference Championships in fourth place in the team standings. The Badgers finished with 1014.5 points. No. 6 Indiana won the team race with 1595.5 points. No. 8 Ohio State took second with 1290.5 points followed by No. 17 Michigan with 1163 points.
It marked the second-straight year that the Badgers have finished in fourth place and the third time in the last four years.
Newmark garners silver
Junior
Jake Newmark continued his success in the championships by adding a silver medal in the 200 back to the Badger medal count. The Garden City, New York, native entered the finals with the fourth-fastest time of the day, dropping a second and a half from his preliminary time to finish second in the final in 1 minute, 40.02 seconds. He was joined by
Wes Jekel in the race, who finished fourth in 1:41.09, and
Cooper Scharff, who earned a ninth-place finish in 1:41.70.
Relay earns bronze
The 400 free relay finished the night off with a bronze medal, hitting the wall in 2:51.47. The relay consisted of Newmark,
Ben Wiegand, Benson, and
Nico Butera.
Other top finishers
In the second session of the day,
Yigit Aslan led Wisconsin in the 1,650 freestyle with a seventh-place finish, completing the race in 15:04.91.
Jack Leuthold followed up in 13th, in 15:16.31 and
Jude Williams was close behind in 15th place, hitting the wall in 15:21.94.
Andrew Benson led UW in the 100 free, touching the wall in 12th place in 43.20.
Ben Wiegand took 15th place in the B final, finishing the race in 43.87.
Nico Butera was right behind in 16th place and finished in 44.45 seconds.
Matthew Segal led the Badgers in the 200 breaststroke with an 11th-place finish, touching in 1:55.77.
Truman teDuits finished in 14th, hitting the wall in 1:56.15 followed up by
Will Myhre earning a 16th-place finish in 1:58.29.
Freshman
Dominik Mark Torok continued the momentum for Wisconsin in the 200 fly, placing fifth in 1:42.58.
Constantin Bensch joined him in the A final to finish seventh in 1:43.23.
